Viscosities of the Gay-Berne nematic liquid crystal [PDF]

open access: yes, 1995
We present molecular dynamics simulation measurements of the viscosities of the Gay-Berne phenomenological model of liquid crystals in the nematic and isotropic phases. The temperature dependence of the rotational and shear viscosities, including the nonmonotonic behavior of one shear viscosity are in good agreement with experimental data.

Development and Validation of a One‐Dimensional Finite Difference Simulation Scheme for Polymer Laser Powder Bed Fusion with Application to the Effect of the Inter Layer Time

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents an efficient simulation approach for the polymer laser powder bed fusion process polymers process, validated with polyamide 12, polyamide 6, and polyetherketoneketone. It shows that inter layer time affects part density, with 90s yielding dense parts.

Viscosity and viscosity anomalies of model silicates and magmas: a numerical investigation

open access: yes, 2012
We present results for transport properties (diffusion and viscosity) using computer simulations. Focus is made on a densified binary sodium disilicate 2SiO$_2$-Na$_2$O (NS2) liquid and on multicomponent magmatic liquids (MORB, basalt). In the NS2 liquid,

Bulk viscosity of a gas of neutrinos and coupled scalar particles, in the era of recombination [PDF]

open access: yesPhys.Rev. D74 (2006) 043527, 2006
Bulk viscosity may serve to damp sound waves in a system of neutrinos coupled to very light scalar particles, in the era after normal neutrino decoupling but before recombination. We calculate the bulk viscosity parameter in a minimal scheme involving the coupling of the two systems.

Simulation of Inhomogeneous Refractive Index Fields Induced by Hot Tailored Forming Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a simulation model for simulating inhomogeneous refractive index fields (IRIF) in hot‐forged components, accounting for thermal influences and complex geometries. Through this simulation, a priori knowledge about the propagation of the IRIF can be obtained, allowing for the positioning of the component or an optical measurement ...

Low-degree mantle convection with strongly temperature- and depth-dependent viscosity in a three-dimensional spherical shell

open access: yes, 2005
A series of numerical simulations of thermal convection of Boussinesq fluid with infinite Prandtl number, with Rayleigh number $10^7$, and with the strongly temperature- and depth- dependent viscosity in a three-dimensional spherical shell is carried out

Rheology of the gel formed in the California Mastitis Test [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The California Mastitis Test has previously been adapted for use in an inline, cow-side sensor and relies on the fact that the viscosity of the gel formed during the test is proportional to the somatic cell concentration.

Impact of Iron Contamination on Liquid Properties and Microstructural Evolution in AlSi20

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Recycled aluminum is much more energy conservative and sustainable than primary aluminum. However, the iron contamination in secondary aluminum is vastly responsible for the degradation of the material properties. Herein, it is aimed to evaluate the influence of iron contamination in hypereutectic Al–Si alloy through thermodynamic as well as ...

Diagnostics for Eddy Viscosity Models of Turbulence Including Data-Driven/Neural Network Based Parameterizations [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Classical eddy viscosity models add a viscosity term with turbulent viscosity coefficient whose specification varies from model to model. Turbulent viscosity coefficient approximations of unknown accuracy are typically constructed by solving associated systems of nonlinear evolution equations or by data driven approaches such as deep neural networks ...

The phonon Hall viscosity of ionic crystals [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
When time-reversal symmetry is broken, the low-energy description of acoustic lattice dynamics allows for a dissipationless component of the viscosity tensor, the phonon Hall viscosity, which captures how phonon chirality grows with the wavevector. In this work, we show that, in ionic crystals, a phonon Hall viscosity contribution is produced by the ...
