The partially filled viscous ring damper

The problem of a spinning satellite with a partially filled viscous ring damper is investigated. It is shown that there are two distinct modes of motion, the nutation-synchronous mode and spin-synchronous mode. From an approximate solution of the equations of motion a time constant is obtained for each mode.

The Spine of the Root Locus for the Viscous Damper

At present the optimization of a vibration isolator is performed in either the time domain or the frequency domain. A new approach, for optimization in the S-plane, is outlined and performed for the viscous damper. Optimization of the viscous damper in the S-plane results in a line that is defined as the spine of the root locus.
