Advance in the assembly of the plant mitochondrial genomes using high‐throughput DNA sequencing data of total cellular DNAs

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 23, Issue 11, Page 4944-4965, November 2025.
Summary The assembly of plant mitochondrial genomes presents unique challenges due to difficulties in isolating mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and plant mitochondrial genome characteristics, such as low interspecific conservation; sequence sharing among mitochondrial, nuclear and plastid DNAs; and complex structural variations.

An eDNA Survey of Plant Biodiversity in a Local Dam Within South Africa's Largest City

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2025.
Ecological information is needed to establish, implement and monitor such biodiversity management plans. This study employs environmental DNA to provide a good overview of plant community structure in an urban dam in Johannesburg, South Africa. It further reveals a gap in the taxonomic coverage of South African plants on public DNA databases.
