Visible light communications: Challenges and possibilities

open access: yes2008 IEEE 19th International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications, 2008
Solid-state lighting is a rapidly developing field. White-light and other visible LEDs are becoming more efficient, have high reliability and can be incorporated into many lighting applications. Recent examples include car head-lights based on white LEDs, and LED illumination as an architectural feature.

Elucidating the Mechanism behind the Enhancement of Persistent Luminescence in ZnGa2O4: Cr3+ Nanoparticles upon H2O2 Exposure

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Persistent luminescence (PersL) materials exhibit prolonged emission of light, lasting from seconds to hours after stopping the excitation. At the nanoscale, they have attracted considerable interest for applications in in vivo imaging, photodynamic therapy, and biosensing.

Bay‐functionalized [7]Helicene Bilayer Nanographenes

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Bay‐functionalized [7]helical bilayer nanographenes are synthesized via a scalable, modular strategy enabling late‐stage diversification. Tailored methoxy, diketone, and phenazine substitutions precisely tune redox, photophysical, and chiroptical properties, delivering strong electronic circular dichroism and bright circularly polarized luminescence ...

A Novel Hybrid Dimming Control Scheme for Visible Light Communications

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2017
A dimming control scheme that combines analog dimming and spatial dimming is proposed. The basic idea of the combined scheme is that both the direct current bias level of each individual light-emitting diode (LED) and the number of glared LEDs are ...

Quasi‐Single‐Mode Polaritonic Crystal for Hyperbolic Phonon‐Polaritons

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Near‐field study of the polaritonic Fourier crystal with α‐MoO3 reveals that the hyperbolic phonon‐polaritons within the Type‐I Reststrahlen band may form a quasi‐single‐mode Bloch wave where only the fundamental mode propagates in the crystal. Our results demonstrate the realization of a quasi‐single‐mode regime for the inherently multimode hyperbolic

Optical Diversity and Nanostructural Organization in the Colored Scales of Sternotomis

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Vivid colors in Sternotomis beetles originate from nanoscale photonic architectures embedded within individual scales. Here, we provide a comparative optical and structural analysis of 57 scale types that reveal how ordered, quasi‐ordered, and disordered 3D networks tune color, saturation, and angular response.
