Machine Learning‐Supported Analysis for Predicting and Visualizing Nonlinear Relationships Between Material Properties in Electroplated Chromium Layers

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study applies machine learning regression to predict chromium layer thickness in decorative trivalent chromium electroplating, using 441 experiments from laboratory‐scale (1L) and pilot‐scale (14L) setups. Tree‐based models, particularly CatBoost, outperformed linear regression by capturing nonlinear parameter interactions (R2$R^2$ up to 0.77 ...

Widesight - a project aimed at improving peripheral vision [Elektronisk resurs]

open access: yes, 2000
Our group of researchers from a variety of backgrounds has been investigating the possibility of improving vision for patients with central scotoma. So far, these patients have only been offered enlarging devices and training.

Low-vision reading speed: Influences of linguistic inference and aging

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose. Reading is a dynamic task involving both linguistic and visual analysis. In this study, we asked how two types of linguistic information - characters used in segmenting words from one another, and sentence context-differ in their usefulness for ...

Comparison of Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Energy Absorbers Under Uniaxial Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates LCD 3D printed Triply Periodic Minimal Surface (TPMS) structures as mechanical energy absorbers. By comparing various base designs and layered combinations under uniaxial compression, it identifies that a Diamond‐Gyroid sandwich structure offers superior performance.

DigiChrom: A Domain Ontology for Semantic Representation of Trivalent Chromium Platings and Its Large Language Model‐Based Alignment With Multiple Mid‐Level Ontologies

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Digitalizing electroplating requires both domain knowledge and interoperability. This work introduces PlatOn, a domain ontology for trivalent chromium plating and coating characterization, and a hybrid pipeline that aligns it to a mid‐level reference ontology by combining eight similarity metrics with language model reasoning. Expert‐validated mappings

Semantic Modeling in Materials Science and Engineering With Platform MaterialDigital Core Ontology 3.0

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The community‐driven Platform MaterialDigital Core Ontology (PMDco) 3.0 is introduced as a Basic Formal Ontology‐aligned semantic backbone for the processing–structure–properties paradigm in Materials Science and Engineering. Modular engineering, automated releases, and validation workflows are highlighted and key semantic patterns for materials ...

Integration of OpenCV‐Based Microscopic Adhesive Volume Measurement Into a Pyiron Workflow for Automated Data Analysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Residual adhesive after electrode loading in adhesive‐assisted resistance spot welding is quantified through a traceable experimental‐to‐digital workflow. Chromatic confocal topography provides calibrated surface‐height data, while OpenCV detects the electrode imprint and integrates adhesive height into comparable volume metrics.

Putting low-level vision into global context: Why vision cannot be reduced to basic circuits

open access: yes
To cope with the complexity of vision, most models in neuroscience and computer vision are of hierarchical and feedforward nature. Low-level vision, such as edge and motion detection, is explained by basic low-level neural circuits, whose outputs serve ...
