Measuring visually guided motor performance in ultra low vision using virtual reality

open access: yesFrontiers in Neuroscience, 2023
IntroductionUltra low vision (ULV) refers to profound visual impairment where an individual cannot read even the top line of letters on an ETDRS chart from a distance of 0.5 m. There are limited tools available to assess visual ability in ULV. The aim of

UG^2: a Video Benchmark for Assessing the Impact of Image Restoration and Enhancement on Automatic Visual Recognition

open access: yes, 2018
Advances in image restoration and enhancement techniques have led to discussion about how such algorithmscan be applied as a pre-processing step to improve automatic visual recognition. In principle, techniques like deblurring and super-resolution should

Real-Time Restoration of Images Degraded by Uniform Motion Blur in Foveal Active Vision Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Foveated, log-polar, or space-variant image architectures provide a high resolution and wide field workspace, while providing a small pixel computation load. These characteristics are ideal for mobile robotic and active vision applications.

Compression Artifacts Reduction by a Deep Convolutional Network

open access: yes, 2015
Lossy compression introduces complex compression artifacts, particularly the blocking artifacts, ringing effects and blurring. Existing algorithms either focus on removing blocking artifacts and produce blurred output, or restores sharpened images that ...

Microstructured Electrode‐Piezopolymer Interface for Ultrasound Transducers With Enhanced Flexibility and Acoustic Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Flexible piezopolymer ultrasound transducers are engineered by tailoring the electrode–piezopolymer interface using metallic, flake‐based, and porous graphene electrodes. Laser‐induced graphene's porous structure enables polymer infiltration, strengthening interfacial coupling and enhancing piezoelectric response and acoustic output.

Restoring Vision to the Blind with Chemical Photoswitches [PDF]

open access: yesChemical Reviews, 2018
Degenerative retinal diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affect millions of people around the world and lead to irreversible vision loss if left untreated. A number of therapeutic strategies have been developed over the years to treat these diseases or restore vision to already blind patients.

Bidirectional Process Prediction in the Laser‐Induced‐Graphene Production Using Blackbox Deep Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This study shows that a lightweight blackbox neural network provides a practical, cost‐effective solution for bidirectional process prediction in laser‐induced graphene (LIG) fabrication. Achieving high predictive performance with minimal overhead, the approach democratizes machine learning (ML) for resource‐limited environments.

A Proof‐of‐Concept Assessment of a Novel Wearable Eyelid Muscle Device: A Pre‐Clinical Animal Cadaver Study for Eyelid Closure Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article introduces a soft wearable eyelid sling device incorporating a hydraulic soft artificial muscle (SAM) for achieving complete closure of an eyelid. The SAM is driven by a cam mechanism that provides a displacement profile closely matched with those of a healthy eyelid.

Convolutional Deblurring for Natural Imaging

open access: yes, 2019
In this paper, we propose a novel design of image deblurring in the form of one-shot convolution filtering that can directly convolve with naturally blurred images for restoration.
