Visual Binary Stars: Data to Investigate Formation of Binaries [PDF]

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2016
Statistics of orbital parameters of binary stars as well as statistics of their physical characteristics bear traces of star formation history. However, statistical investigations of binaries are complicated by incomplete or missing observational data ...

Asteroseismology of the visual binary 70 Ophiuchi [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2006
Convection in stars excites resonant acoustic waves. The frequencies of these oscillations depend on the sound speed inside the star, which in turn depends on density, temperature, gas motion, and other properties of the stellar interior.

VIBES: VIsual Binary Exoplanet survey with SPHERE Upper limits on wide S-planet and S-BD frequencies, triple system discovery, and astrometric confirmation of 20 stellar binaries and three triple systems [PDF]

open access: yesA&A 643, A98 (2020), 2020
Recent surveys indicate that planets in binary systems are more abundant than previously thought, which is in agreement with theoretical work on disc dynamics and planet formation in binaries. In order to measure the abundance and physical characteristics of wide-orbit giant exoplanets in binary systems, we have designed the 'VIsual Binary Exoplanet ...

Statistical Analysis of a Comprehensive List of Visual Binaries [PDF]

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2015
Visual binary stars are the most abundant class of observed binaries. The most comprehensive list of data on visual binaries compiled recently by cross-matching the largest catalogues of visual binaries allowed a statistical investigation of ...

The same, but different: Stochasticity in binary destruction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Observations of binaries in clusters tend to be of visual binaries with separations of 10s - 100s au. Such binaries are 'intermediates' and their destruction or survival depends on the exact details of their individual dynamical history. We investigate the stochasticity of the destruction of such binaries and the differences between the initial and ...

Herbig Ae/Be Visual Binaries [PDF]

open access: bronzeSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 2001
We present the results of a high-angular resolution spectro-imaging survey of a sample of isolated Herbig Ae-Be (HAeBe) stars aimed at searching for close companions. The fraction of wide binaries is found to be significantly higher in HAeBe stars than in solar-mass field dwarfs, and suggests a companion star fraction possibly larger than 1.

Spectroscopic analysis of the B/Be visual binary HR 1847 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We studied both components of a slightly overlooked visual binary HR 1847 spectroscopically to determine its basic physical and orbital parameters. Basic stellar parameters were determined by comparing synthetic spectra to the observed echelle spectra ...

HBST: A Hamming Distance embedding Binary Search Tree for Visual Place Recognition [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Robotics and Automation Letters, 2018
Reliable and efficient Visual Place Recognition is a major building block of modern SLAM systems. Leveraging on our prior work, in this paper we present a Hamming Distance embedding Binary Search Tree (HBST) approach for binary Descriptor Matching and ...

Multiplicity of Nearby Free-floating Ultra-cool Dwarfs: a HST-WFPC2 search for companions [PDF]

open access: yesAstron.J. 126 (2003) 1526, 2003
We present HST/WFPC2 observations of a sample of 134 ultra-cool objects (spectral types later than M7) coming from the DENIS, 2MASS and SDSS surveys, with distances estimated to range from 7 pc to 105 pc. Fifteen new ultra-cool binary candidates are reported here. Eleven known binaries are confirmed and orbital motion is detected in some of them.
