Visual Binary Stars: Data to Investigate Formation of Binaries [PDF]

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2016
Statistics of orbital parameters of binary stars as well as statistics of their physical characteristics bear traces of star formation history. However, statistical investigations of binaries are complicated by incomplete or missing observational data ...

Visual Orbits and Alignments of Planet-hosting Binary Systems

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal, 2023
Roughly half of Solar-type planet hosts have stellar companions, so understanding how these binary companions affect the formation and evolution of planets is an important component to understanding planetary systems overall.

Herbig Ae/Be Visual Binaries [PDF]

open access: bronzeSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 2001
We present the results of a high-angular resolution spectro-imaging survey of a sample of isolated Herbig Ae-Be (HAeBe) stars aimed at searching for close companions. The fraction of wide binaries is found to be significantly higher in HAeBe stars than in solar-mass field dwarfs, and suggests a companion star fraction possibly larger than 1.

On the component masses of visual binaries

open access: diamondSerbian Astronomical Journal, 2010
In the Sixth Catalog of Orbits of Visual Binary Stars we found those belonging to the Main Sequence to form a sample containing 432 visual binaries. Their total masses were obtained dynamically, i.e. they were calculated using the orbital elements and the new Hipparcos parallaxes.

The orbit of the visual binary ADS 8630 (γ Vir)

open access: green, 2007
We present a new orbit for the visual binary ADS 8630 = γ Vir. Although it is one of the first visual double stars discovered, its orbital elements were still poorly known.

The visual binary Lambda Ophiuchi

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1993
The orbital elements of this visual binary are revised; we find a=0.91" and P=129 yr. The mass ratio measured from a 75-yr series of astrometric plates supports the spectroscopically suspected presence of a third body.

Orbital elements of six visual binary stars

open access: green, 2001
Revised orbital elements of the visual binary stars STT 515, BU 4 AB, STF 183 AB, A 207, STT 43 and A 2413 are given. Dynamical parallaxes and total masses of the systems have been calculated.
