Visual clutter reduction in zoomable proportional point symbol maps

open access: yesCartography and Geographic Information Science, 2019
Proportional point symbols are commonly used in map displays. However, when such displays are zoomed out, the available map space shrinks and consequently symbols overlap and the display suffers from visual clutter.

Lowering Visual Clutter in Large Component Diagrams

2012 16th International Conference on Information Visualisation, 2012
Nowadays component applications can easily consist of hundreds or thousands of components and it is thus difficult to understand their structure. Diagram visualisation does not help much because of visual clutter caused by big amount of elements and connections, especially in the case of flat component models.

Clutter-Adaptive Visualization for Mobile Data Mining

2010 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining Workshops, 2010
There is an emerging focus on real-time data stream analysis on mobile devices. While many mobile data stream mining algorithms have been developed in recent times, generic and scalable visualization techniques have not been presented. This paper presents the demonstration of our innovative clutter-adaptive cluster visualization technique for mobile ...

Improving visual analytics environments through a methodological framework for automatic clutter reduction

open access: yesJournal of Visual Languages and Computing, 2011
One of the main visual analytics characteristics is the tight integration between automatic computations and interactive visualization. This generally corresponds to the availability of powerful algorithms that allow for manipulating the data under ...

Object segmentation in cluttered and visually complex environments

Autonomous Robots, 2013
Object segmentation is essential for systems that acquire object models online for robotic grasping. However, it remains a major technical challenge in visually complex and uncontrolled environments. Segmentation algorithms that rely on image features alone can perform poorly under certain lighting conditions, or if the object and the background have ...

Techniques to reduce cluttering of RDF visualizations

Future Generation Computer Systems, 2015
The Resource Description Framework (RDF) provides a generic way to represent data as a graph using Web standards. The benefits of using RDF are multiple, including an extensible and generic data model that can be used to represent almost any knowledge domain.

Visual Cluttering Reduction for Visualizing Large Spatio-temporal Data Sets

2014 IEEE 17th International Conference on Computational Science and Engineering, 2014
Visual analytic techniques are useful for studying patterns and relationships hidden in very large data sets. However, a common problem in visualizing large data sets is visual cluttering. When data get large, visual elements often get crowded, making it difficult for viewers to conduct analysis.

Recognizing objects in adversarial clutter: breaking a visual CAPTCHA

2003 IEEE Computer Society Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2003. Proceedings., 2003
In this paper we explore object recognition in clutter. We test our object recognition techniques on Gimpy and EZ-Gimpy, examples of visual CAPTCHAs. A CAPTCHA ("Completely Automated Public Turing test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart") is a program that can generate and grade tests that most humans can pass, yet current computer programs can't pass.

Visual attention model for target search in cluttered scene

2011 IEEE 10th IVMSP Workshop: Perception and Visual Signal Analysis, 2011
Visual attention models generate saliency maps in which attentive regions are more distinctive with respect to remaining parts of the scene. In this work, a new model of orientation conspicuity map (OCM) is presented for the computation of saliency. The proposed method is based on the difference of the Gabor filter outputs with orthogonal orientations ...

Visual Display Screen Clutter Metrics

Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, 2000
This paper explores the use of conjoint analysis as a measure of the subjective evaluation of clutter on avionics displays. As new systems are added to glass-cockpit aircraft they are overlaid onto existing systems and more and more symbology is present on these displays.
