Evaluating Encodings for Bivariate Edges in Adjacency Matrices
Abstract We present the first empirical evaluation of techniques for encoding distributions of quantitative edge values within adjacency matrices. In many real‐world networks, edges represent not a single value but a set of measurements. While adjacency matrices preserve structural clarity, their compact cells limit the simultaneous display of multiple

Investigating Performance and Practices with Univariate Distribution Charts
Abstract A range of charts with different strengths and weaknesses exists to support the visual analysis of univariate distributions, with a limited understanding of which charts best support which tasks and users, and how practitioners use charts. We categorize the available charts for univariate distributions into four groups and present the results ...

Visual Identification and Comparison of Higher Order Properties in State Transition Sequences
Abstract The analysis of state transition sequences is a prevalent research topic in many domains. In this context, we introduce the term higher‐order property to describe characteristics of the analyzed data set that span beyond the local neighborhood of a single state.

Survey on Visualization of Information Diffusion over Networks
Abstract Information Diffusion (ID) describes how a value (e.g., a pathogen, a rumor, a packet) spreads through an underlying “medium” network of elements (e.g., a social or computer network). Understanding the information diffusion process is essential to predicting trends, controlling misinformation, and enhancing decision‐making as well as ...

The Story(line) So Far: A Survey on Storyline Visualization
Abstract Storyline visualizations model narratives as temporal networks, using x‐monotone lines to represent entities and their interactions over time. This technique offers an intuitive way to reveal structural patterns over time, such as character co‐occurrence and narrative flow.
