A Machine Learning Approach to Visual Perception of Forest Trails for Mobile Robots
We study the problem of perceiving forest or mountain trails from a single monocular image acquired from the viewpoint of a robot traveling on the trail itself.

The Influence of Social Priming on Speech Perception [PDF]
Speech perception relies on auditory, visual, and motor cues and has been historically difficult to model, partially due to this multimodality. One of the current models is the Fuzzy Logic Model of Perception (FLMP), which suggests that if one of these ...

Engaging the articulators enhances perception of concordant visible speech movements [PDF]
PURPOSE This study aimed to test whether (and how) somatosensory feedback signals from the vocal tract affect concurrent unimodal visual speech perception.

As many patients with inflammatory arthritis (IA) have chronic pain, understanding how to best assess and manage pain in IA is a priority. Co‐morbid depression is prevalent in adults with IA, affecting 15 to 39% of people. Whilst pain and depression are thought to be associated in IA, this concept is largely based on cross‐sectional data.

Contributions of temporal encodings of voicing, voicelessness, fundamental frequency, and amplitude variation to audiovisual and auditory speech perception [PDF]
Auditory and audio-visual speech perception was investigated using auditory signals of invariant spectral envelope that temporally encoded the presence of voiced and voiceless excitation, variations in amplitude envelope and F-0.

A Novel Digitalization Approach for Smart Materials – Ontology‐Based Access to Data and Models
In order to access heterogeneous material data and model‐based knowledge, the established ontology‐based data access (OBDA) is extended to include material models. This novel ontology‐based data and model access (OBDMA) enables the computation of new responses beyond stored data.

Sarcopenia diagnosis using skeleton-based gait sequence and foot-pressure image datasets
IntroductionSarcopenia is a common age-related disease, defined as a decrease in muscle strength and function owing to reduced skeletal muscle. One way to diagnose sarcopenia is through gait analysis and foot-pressure imaging.Motivation and research ...

Eccentricity dependent auditory enhancement of visual stimulus detection but not discrimination [PDF]
Sensory perception is enhanced by the complementary information provided by our different sensory modalities and even apparently task irrelevant stimuli in one modality can facilitate performance in another.

This study explores geometry‐driven phase evolution in gyroid shell metamaterials made via laser powder bed fusion of 17‐4 precipitation hardened stainless steel. Locally hardened regions develop along the primary loading paths in the structure, which finite element analysis and geometric considerations link to enhanced gyroid strength.

In recent years, semantic segmentation methods based on fully convolutional networks (FCNs) have achieved great success. However, these methods tend to produce inconsistency and isolated class labels, mainly because the end-to-end mapping of FCN ...
