Vitruvius is the author of De architectura (c. 20s bce), the only text devoted to architecture that survives from classical antiquity. On the basis of internal evidence, scholars date Vitruvius’s De architectura to c. 27–22 bce. There is no generally accepted theory of acoustics of concert halls based on the physics of sound as waves. Lord Rayleigh, founder of the science, remarked but little about sound in rooms. Wallace Clement Sabine made an analogy of sound in rooms to the kinetic theory of gases; although this is theoretically untenable, Sabine designed the superb concert

Abstract Vitruvius's Ten Books on Architecture was in regular use as a design manual for over 1500 years. This paper argues for a reinterpretation of Vitruvius in terms of design method. On this view, the study of Vitruvius and his historical influence still has important lessons for the theory of types and for the construction of design heuristics.
