Future directions of space VLBI: International VLBI Satellite (IVS)
Advances in Space Research, 1991Abstract Future space VLBI missions will explore new dimensions in angular resolution, sensitivity, frequency range and image quality. The International VLBI Satellite (IVS), currently under assessment by ESA and the Soviet Academy of Sciences, proposes to make significant advances in all these parameters compared with the first generation missions ...

The application of very-long baseline interferometry (VLBI) techniques at meter and decameter wavelengths has proven to be a unique tool for studying a number of different phenomena. Because of the high angular resolution which we achieve with VLBI, candidate objects for study include the compact nuclei and "jets" associated with quasars and radio ...

The European VLBI Network (EVN) is a network of radio telescopes located primarily in Europe and Asia, with additional antennas in South Africa and Puerto Rico, which performs very high angular resolution observations of cosmic radio sources. This report comprises information on the EVN science, operations, observatory reports, activities, meetings ...

Orbit determination of geosynchronous satellites by VLBI and differential VLBI
Astrodynamics Conference, 1982Four approaches to radio interferometric tracking of geosynchronous satellites are analyzed and compared. Quasar-based differential very-long-baseline interferometry, which requires a very sensitive receiver, can achieve meter-level position accuracy with a two-baseline system.

There are many important astrophysical questions which could be answered with observations at frequencies of a few MHz and angular resolution of an arcminute or better. For example, strong interstellar and interplanetary scattering of electromagnetic radiation could be studied along many lines of sight, and the sizes and shapes of scattering disks ...

This paper gives an overview about the progress of the simulation work, carried out at the Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics (IGG), with the goal to design a new geodetic Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) system. Influences of the schedule, the network geometry and the main stochastic processes on the geodetic results are investigated.

In Chap. 3 we analyzed the single-dish observations of the flare in CTA 102 and interpreted the double hump structure in the \(\nu _m-S_m\)-plane as the interaction between a traveling shock wave and recollimation shock.

The prime observables in interferometry are the fringe amplitude and the fringe phase. Geodesy-VLBI data with strong fringes, i.e., with good signal-to-noise ratio, improve the result. The useful information is, however, in the fringe phase and in its variation with time and frequency.

The principles of Very Long Baseline Interferometry are essentially the same as those in connected-element interferometry. Both systems can be used to make images of extended radio sources through the application of various calibration and image restoration techniques or to measure geometric quantities such as the positions of point sources or baseline
