A Feasibility Study of the Repurposing of Prazosin to Improve Treatment Outcomes in Men Receiving Radiotherapy for Prostate Cancer (MiniRaP‐00)

open access: yesThe Prostate, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Further work is needed to improve treatment outcomes for prostate cancer (PCa), with the repurposing of the α1‐adrenoreceptor antagonists presenting a potential solution. This feasibility clinical trial presents the first prospective data of the use of an α1‐adrenoreceptor antagonist in men undergoing radiotherapy for PCa.

Multi-GPU implementation of a VMAT treatment plan optimization algorithm

open access: yes, 2015
VMAT optimization is a computationally challenging problem due to its large data size, high degrees of freedom, and many hardware constraints. High-performance graphics processing units have been used to speed up the computations.

Patterns of CT lung injury and toxicity after stereotactic radiotherapy delivered with helical tomotherapy in early stage medically inoperable NSCLC [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
To evaluate toxicity and patterns of radiologic lung injury on CT images after hypofractionated image-guided stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) delivered with helical tomotherapy (HT) in medically early stage inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer ...

Dopamine: The Essential Bridge Mediating Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Hippocampus‐Dependent Learning and Memory Impairments

open access: yesWorld Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Obstructive sleep apnea is a clinical syndrome that triggers a series of pathophysiologic changes, including disturbed sleep architecture, chronic intermittent hypoxia and hypercapnia, and ultimately severe cognitive dysfunction. The hippocampus plays a key role in various cognitive processes such as learning and memory.

Differential regulation of the Drosophila sleep homeostat by circadian and arousal inputs. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
One output arm of the sleep homeostat in Drosophila appears to be a group of neurons with projections to the dorsal fan-shaped body (dFB neurons) of the central complex in the brain.

Comparison of breast simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) radiotherapy techniques [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Purpose: To dosimetrically evaluate different breast SIB techniques with respect to target coverage and organs at risk (OARs) doses. Methods: Four IMRT techniques were compared in 12 patients. Three techniques employ tangential whole breast irradiation

Automated contouring, treatment planning, and quality assurance for VMAT craniospinal irradiation (VMAT-CSI)

open access: yesFrontiers in Oncology
PurposeCreate a comprehensive automated solution for pediatric and adult VMAT-CSI including contouring, planning, and plan check to reduce planning time and improve plan quality.MethodsSeventy-seven previously treated CSI patients (age, 2-67 years) were used for creation of an auto-contouring model to segment 25 organs at risk (OARs).

Estimating the Carbon Footprint of External Beam Radiotherapy: Should This Be a Concern for LMICs?

open access: yesJournal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Oncology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Purpose This study aims to estimate the carbon footprint associated with external beam radiotherapy in a low‐ and middle‐income country (LMIC) context, specifically at the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI), and to evaluate whether sustainability should be a priority alongside treatment access in such radiation therapy settings.

Deep learning-based upsampling of 2D detector array measurements for patient plan verification in radiotherapy. [PDF]

open access: yesMed Phys
Abstract Background Detector arrays are commonly used for treatment plan verifications in intensity modulated radiation therapy. However, the intrinsic resolution of detector arrays is limited by the physical dimensions of each single detector and the detector‐to‐detector distance.
