Bilateral Symmetry and Variation of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve and Inferior Thyroid Artery Patterns: An Intraoperative Study of 150 Nerves

open access: yesClinical Anatomy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The anatomical relationship of the inferior thyroid artery (ITA) and the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) is highly variable. This study aims to evaluate bilateral RLN branching patterns and their relationship to the ITA within the same patient, predicting contralateral anatomical variations and ultimately reducing intraoperative risk of RLN ...

Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord palsy in extremely premature neonates

open access: yes, 2006
Idiopathic bilateral vocal cord palsy is a rare complication in the neonatal period. We report 3 cases in extremely premature infants where early flexible bronchoscopy enabled early diagnosis and treatment.

Sonographic Utilisation in the Detection of Vocal Cord Palsy in Symptomatic Patients and in Those with Risk Factors for Cord Palsy

open access: yesApollo Medicine
Aims and Background: Ultrasound (US) is useful for imaging the head and neck, including laryngeal disorders. The gold standard for diagnosing laryngeal abnormalities is flexible laryngoscopy; however, because US does not interfere with vocal cord ...

Effect of Electromyography Findings of Traction‐Related Signal Loss on Prognosis During Neuromonitored Thyroidectomy

open access: yesHead &Neck, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) is a reliable tool to detect electromyographic loss of signal (LOS). Here, we investigated the effect of electromyography features of traction‐related LOS on prognosis. Methods Thyroidectomy patients with a traction‐related LOS were included.

Laser Posterior Cordectomy for Bilateral Abductor Vocal Cord Palsy : A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Bilateral abductor vocal cord palsy is comparatively a rare vocal cord lesion, especially in a patient with no history of neck mass, previous surgery or trauma. Many patients are not stridulous. A patient presenting with stridor may need emergency airway

A single-arm, prospective study comparing translaryngeal ultrasonography with direct visualisation by flexible laryngoscopy for vocal cord assessment in patients undergoing oesophagectomy or mediastinoscopy

open access: yesIndian Journal of Anaesthesia, 2023
Background and Aims: Translaryngeal ultrasonography (TLUSG) for diagnosis of vocal cord palsy, a relatively new, safe and noninvasive bedside technique with minimal risk of respiratory infection transmission, has been effective in patients with thyroid ...

Effects of Intubation Duration on Trachea: A Histopathological Study

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This study evaluated the histopathological effects of prolonged endotracheal intubation on the human trachea using biopsy specimens obtained during tracheotomy. Prolonged intubation was associated with progressive inflammatory and structural changes, with tracheal dilatation and perichondritis increasing significantly after 14 days.

A Scoping Review of Laryngeal Edema Rating Scales for Extubated Acute Respiratory Failure Survivors

open access: yesThe Laryngoscope, EarlyView.
This scoping review identified existing laryngeal edema rating scales and evaluated whether any are adequately designed for post‐extubation acute respiratory failure (ARF) survivors. Across 35 included studies, most used subjective binary classifications and only the RTOG and Patterson Edema scales had operational definitions and reliability/validity ...
