Effect of Vocal Nerve Section on Song and ZENK Protein Expression in Area X in Adult Male Zebra Finches

open access: yesNeural Plasticity, 2012
ZENK expression in vocal nuclei is associated with singing behavior. Area X is an important nucleus for learning and stabilizing birdsong. ZENK expression is higher in Area X compared to that in other vocal nuclei when birds are singing.

Nonlinear vocal phenomena affect human perceptions of distress, size and dominance in puppy whines

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2022
While nonlinear phenomena (NLP) are widely reported in animal vocalizations, often causing perceptual harshness and roughness, their communicative function remains debated. Several hypotheses have been put forward: attention-grabbing, communication of distress, exaggeration of body size and dominance.

Idiopathic vocal fold paralysis in two adolescent patients with neurofibromatosis type 2

open access: yesOtolaryngology Case Reports, 2020
Objectives: Neurofibromatosis 2 (NF2) is an autosomal dominant condition presenting with bilateral vestibular schwannomas and other neural tumors. Vocal fold paralysis (VFP) in NF2 patients is typically due to compression of the vagus nerve at the ...

Think Before They Squeak: Vocalizations of the Squirrel Family

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2020
Squirrels (Sciuridae) are a diverse group in behavior, morphology, and ecology. This variation is typified by the wide range of vocalizations spanning ground squirrels (Marmotini and Xerini), tree squirrels (Callosciurinae and Sciurini), and flying ...

Distribution and Appearance of Ki-67, IL-1α, IL-10, and PGP 9.5 in Reinke’s Oedema-Affected Larynx Tissue Compared with Control Tissue

open access: yesLife, 2021
Smoking, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and vocal fold abuse can promote the development of Reinke’s oedema, leading to vocal fold dysfunction and injury. The aim of the work was to investigate the appearance and distribution of proliferation marker Ki-67 (Ki-

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Interspecific Dominance Via Vocal Interactions Mediates Altitudinal Zonation in Neotropical Singing Mice [PDF]

open access: yesThe American Naturalist, 2013
Interspecific aggression between ecologically similar species may influence geographic limits by mediating competitive exclusion at the range edge. Advertisement signals that mediate competitive interactions within species may also provide social information that contributes to behavioral dominance and spatial segregation among species.
