Advertisement call of Hyla jimi and Hyla elianeae (Anura, Hylidae) in the Botucatu Region, São Paulo, Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
In this work we present a description of the advertisement call of H. jimi, the locality type, and of H. elianeae, until now unknown in the literature. Field activities were carried out from August 1997 through June 1999; recordings were made in two open-

Transparent UV‐Curable Self‐Sanitizing Coatings Applicable to Diverse Surfaces and High‐Touch Screens to Mitigate Deadly Pathogen Transmission

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Development of a transparent, self‐sanitizing antimicrobial coating technology applicable to a wide range of materials and surfaces‐including touchscreens, transparent substrates, and metal, plastic, and glass‐regardless of pathogen type. The spray‐coated, UV‐cross‐linked imidazole‐based quaternary ammonium chloride materials provide broad‐spectrum ...

Study of Non-Linearities in Humpback Whale Song Units

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering
Unique in mammals, the vocal generator of mysticete species comprises membranes covering the two arytenoid cartilages that vibrate as the airflow passes through the trachea from the lungs to the laryngeal sac.

A New Threshold Switching Device With Tunable Negative Differential Resistance Based on ErMnO3 Polymorphs

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymorph engineering in ErMnO3 enables low‐voltage, forming‐free threshold switching with tunable negative differential resistance. Conducting orthorhombic regions embedded in an insulating hexagonal matrix provide controlled Joule‐heating‐enhanced Poole–Frenkel transport. The hexagonal phase prevents excessive heating and breakdown.

Interaction of the phencyclidine model of schizophrenia and nicotine on total and categorized ultrasonic vocalizations in rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Patients with schizophrenia smoke cigarettes at a higher rate than the general population. We hypothesized that a factor in this comorbidity is sensitivity to the reinforcing and reinforcement- enhancement effects of nicotine.

Articulating: the neural mechanisms of speech production [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Speech production is a highly complex sensorimotor task involving tightly coordinated processing across large expanses of the cerebral cortex. Historically, the study of the neural underpinnings of speech suffered from the lack of an animal model.

Actuating and Sensing Composites of Liquid Crystal Elastomers and Poly(ionic liquid)s

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic conductive, mechanically tough, flexible, and stretchable filaments of a composite material comprising a liquid crystal elastomer and a poly(ionic liquid) are produced through 3D printing, which exhibit large actuation strain under stimulation and electrical resistance variation in response to deformation or environmental condition changes. Their

Machine learning to predict killer whale (Orcinus orca) behaviors using partially labeled vocalization data

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Orcinus orca (killer whales) exhibit complex calls. In a call, an orca typically varies the frequencies, varies the length, varies the temporal patterns, varies their volumes, and can use multiple frequencies simultaneously.

A Constructive Model of Mother-Infant Interaction towards Infant’s Vowel Articulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Human infants seem to develop to acquire common phonemes to adults without the capability to articulate or any explicit knowledge. To understand such unrevealed human cognitive development, building a robot which reproduces such a developmental process ...

Optoelectronic Control of Redox Dynamics in POM Memristors for Noise‐Resilient Speech and Hardware‐Level Motion Recognition

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Optoelectronic control of redox‐active polyoxometalate clusters in polymer matrices yields hybrid memristors with switchable volatile and non‐volatile modes, enabling reservoir‐type in‐sensor optical preprocessing and stable multilevel synapses for multimodal neuromorphic computing, including noise‐tolerant audiovisual keyword recognition and hardware ...
