Particle detection in VOF-simulations with OpenFOAM

open access: yesSoftwareX, 2020
The aim of this work is to improve the particle detection in the phase field of volume of fluid (VOF) simulations included in OpenFOAM. The reliable evaluation of the particle properties is a prerequisite for coupling the VOF method for the primary breakup with an Eulerian–Lagrangian simulation of the secondary breakup.

Numerical Insights Into the Resistance Reduction Mechanisms of Forward Tapered Transoms in High‐Speed Catamaran: A Computational Fluid Dynamics‐Based Study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mechanical System Dynamics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigates the hydrodynamic influence of forward transom tapering on a displacement catamaran hull using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Five taper configurations ranging from a vertical transom base design to a fully tapered stern (1.00B) were evaluated over a wide Froude number range (Fr = .3 to 1.0).

Taylor bubble moving in a flowing liquid in vertical channel: transition from symmetric to asymmetric shape [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
The velocity and shape of Taylor bubbles moving in a vertical channel in a Poiseuille liquid flow were studied for the inertial regime, characterized by large Reynolds numbers.

Explicit‐Implicit Material Point Method for Dense Granular Flows With a Novel Regularized µ(I) Model

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The material point method (MPM) is widely employed to simulate granular flows. Although explicit time integration is favored in most current MPM implementations for its simplicity, it cannot rigorously incorporate the incompressible µ(I)‐rheology, an efficient model ubiquitously adopted in other particle‐based numerical methods. While operator‐

Numerical Study on Passing Flow Through Circular Channels with Side [PDF]

open access: yesمهندسی منابع آب, 2017
Side weir is used as a slot in the side of main channel to direct excess flows that are above the weir crest. Such structures are used in control of flow level in irrigation, drainage networks and urban sewage disposal systems.

Aligning Real‐Time Recurrence Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations with Plant Data for the Ruhrstahl–Heraeus Degassing Process of Steel

open access: yessteel research international, EarlyView.
Uncertainties exist in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of complex metallurgical processes, even when partly validated by laboratory experiments. rCFD enables computationally efficient prediction of long‐term RH degassing and can be adapted to vary flow conditions.

Numerical Investigation of the Performance of Blade Groynes on Scouring and its Effect on Hydraulic Parameters of Sediment and Flow [PDF]

open access: yesمحیط زیست و مهندسی آب
One of the significant issues in hydraulic engineering is reducing erosion in rivers by using groynes to preserve soil. The purpose of this study is to investigate numerically the groynes' presence on the sedimentary flow parameters using FLOW-3D ...

Surrogate vascular input function measurements from the superior sagittal sinus are repeatable and provide tissue-validated kinetic parameters in brain DCE-MRI

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Accurate vascular input function (VIF) derivation is essential in brain dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI. The optimum site for VIF estimation is, however, debated.

Improved droplet breakup models for spray applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The current study examines the performance of two zero-dimensional (0D) aerodynamically-induced breakup models, utilized for the prediction of droplet deformation during the breakup process in the bag, multi-mode and sheet-thinning regimes.
