Microbial Weathering of Volcanic Rocks [PDF]
The aim of this thesis was to further the knowledge on microbial weathering, by looking at the effect of model organisms (Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Geobacter metallireducens) to natural microbial communities (from basaltic glass). It was found that the medium water-rock ratio (50:1) provided the optimum conditions for A.

Rethinking Chlorine: Essential Chemical or Replaceable Risk?
This review critically examines the dual nature of chlorine as both an indispensable base chemical and a potential risk. Chlorine and its by‐product hydrogen chloride play essential roles in the production of pharmaceuticals, plastics, agrochemicals, and disinfectants.

A new classification for inland freshwater palaeowetlands to be used in the field or core laboratory by sedimentologists, providing examples from the Guadix Basin (southern Spain). Abstract Present wetlands have proven to be delicate, biodiverse ecosystems, that are natural sinks for CO2 and act as good indicators for climate changes.

Abstract Per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), heptafluorobutyric acid (HFBA), and perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTA), are commonly occurring organic pollutants. Exposure to PFAS affects the immune system, thyroid and kidney function, lipid metabolism, and insulin signaling and is also involved in the ...

Lacustrine and fan‐delta sediments in syn‐rift lake basins
A consistent model for the sequence framework and depositional pattern of asymmetric half‐grabens in syn‐rift lake basins bounded by active faults has been established, complementing existing models for marine rift successions. Syn‐rift lake basins are characterised by relatively small dimensions, steep slopes, poorly developed shoreline strata ...

A limestone cave in the NW Dinarides exhibits an anomalous presence of montmorillonite clay, not commonly found in surrounding caves, posing questions about its origin and age. Analysis reveals a composition similar to weathered tephra from the Smrekovec Volcanic Complex, suggesting transport by north‐east winds.

Characterizing Drivers of Asia's Black Elephant Disaster Risks
Abstract Asia has the fastest growing population and economy, but it is also the most disaster‐prone region in the world. Resilience to disaster impacts from natural hazards will be key to the long‐term sustainability of this rapidly growing region. The first step to building resilience is to identify the key threats that this region faces. We describe

Cummingtonite-bearing volcanic rocks: first evidence in the Central Slovak Volcanic Field
Within the framework of reinterpretation of the depositional evolution of the Komjatice depression, presence of cummingtonite in weakly lithified sediment has been detected.
