The Aging Landscape by scRNAseq of Mesenchymal Lineage Cells in Mouse Bone

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
scRNA‐seq analysis reveals age‐related changes in bone mesenchymal cells in male and female mice. Moreover, the comparison of aging and autophagy deficiency in bone mesenchymal cells shows overlap and suggests that age‐related decline in autophagy contributes to skeletal aging.

The Metabolic Transition Between Fasting and Feeding Alters Aging‐Associated Metabolites, Lowers BCAAs, and Stimulates FGF21 Production in Humans

open access: yesAging Cell, EarlyView.
In humans, prolonged fasting profoundly remodels the plasma metabolome while maintaining stable levels of BCAA and FGF21. Upon refeeding, plasma BCAAs (valine, isoleucine, and leucine) decline, reflecting tissue uptake and coinciding with a surge in FGF21, independent of insulin and glucose.

‘Missing persons’: Ancient legacies of human–environment interaction in tropical natural properties inscribed under the 1972 World Heritage Convention

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
Abstract Cultural and natural values form the core of World Heritage designation. Properties displaying both values, however, comprise a fraction of inscriptions (currently c. 3%) to the World Heritage List. In 1992, when that fraction stood at c. 5%, adoption of the popular ‘cultural landscapes’ category of cultural heritage in 1992 was therefore ...

Vog: Using Volcanic Eruptions to Estimate the Health Costs of Particulates

open access: yesThe Economic Journal, EarlyView., 2018
The negative consequences of long‐term exposure to particulate pollution are well established but a number of studies find no effect of short‐term exposure on health outcomes. The high correlation of industrial pollutants complicates the estimation of the impact of individual pollutants on health.

Sourcing carnelian beads from the ancient Mesopotamian site of Kish, Iraq, 2450–2200 BCE: Stylistic, technological and geochemical approaches

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
Abstract Trade between Mesopotamia and the Indus Civilization is studied through the analysis of Early Dynastic III Period (2600–2350 BCE) carnelian beads from the site of Kish, Iraq. Morphological and technological features of the beads are compared with beads from the Indus region.
