Spectral parameters of volcanic tremors at etna

Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 1977
Abstract Volcanic tremors at Etna and Stromboli show two dominant peaks in the spectrum at 2.7 Hz and 4.0 Hz. A model is evaluated which attributes these peaks to weakly damped, harmonic oscillating sources in the upper part of the magma column.

Reliability evaluation of volcanic tremor source location determination using cross-correlation functions

, 2019
Source location determination of volcanic tremor has been a challenge in seismology due to the waveform complexity and difficulties in reading P- and S-wave arrival times.

On the spectral peaks of volcanic tremor at Stromboli

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 1999
Abstract Seismic activity at Stromboli Volcano is characterized by a variety of signals, emanating from three vents. For a long time, the northwest vent has been in constant activity. Periodically, large explosions occur and material is ejected beyond the crater walls.

Very-Long-Period Volcanic Tremor at Stromboli, Italy

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2005
We analyze a long time–space series of Stromboli volcanic tremors. A very-low-frequency content in the range of 0.02–0.5 Hz has been found by using spectral analysis and independent component analysis. Independent component analysis is an entropy-based technique. We observe the occurrence of a component having a period of 30 sec.

Volcanic tremor at Mt. Etna: State-of-the-art and perspectives

pure and applied geophysics, 1987
Volcanic tremor on Etna seems to have its origin within the main magma feeding system. On the basis of both spectral analyses at two permanent seismic stations and periodical measurements along the slopes of the volcano, two distinct sources are proposed.

Seismic tremors and magma wagging during explosive volcanism

Nature, 2011
Volcanic tremor is a ubiquitous feature of explosive eruptions. This oscillation persists for minutes to weeks and is characterized by a remarkably narrow band of frequencies from about 0.5 Hz to 7 Hz (refs 1-4). Before major eruptions, tremor can occur in concert with increased gas flux and related ground deformation.

Modelling of volcanic tremor wave fields

Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 1992
Abstract The comparison of the temporal variations of the volcanic tremor for various eruptions shows stable connection between tremor intensity and volcanic activity. We have determined the wave pattern of seismic signals produced by individual explosions in the crater during eruption of the Tolbachik volcano (Kamchatka). Considering an explosion in

Volcanic tremors given mathematical foundation

Physics World, 1992
Researchers at Perugia in Italy have found new experimental evidence of self-organised criticality in the ultrasonic acoustic emissions (AE) from volcanic rock ruptures. The measurements at Stromboli in the Italian Aeolian Islands show that the number of acoustic emissions with energy E is given by a power law, N(E)dE ~ E-(1+b)dE, with a b-value close ...
