ABSTRACT The McMurdo Dry Valleys, the largest ice‐free region in Antarctica, are home to a cold‐desert hydrologic system of glaciers, snowbanks, streams, and lakes. Freshwater is also stored as dead glacial ice, which is poorly constrained in terms of ion concentrations and interactions with both in situ and overlying sediments.

Monitoring of Volcano deformation
Monitoring ground surface deformation is an essential component of volcano monitoring, along with other techniques, such as seismology, geochemistry and geology. This chapter presents the different sources at the origin of the deformation observed in a volcanic context, followed by a review of the various techniques used for measuring such deformation.

Deformed symmetrical volcanoes
Geology, 2005Analog modeling of volcanic cones traversed by strike-slip faulting was conducted, and the cones were analyzed for deformation characteristics. The study shows that symmetrical volcanoes that have undergone basal strike-slip offset may be deformed internally without manifesting any change in their conical shape.

The role of basement in volcano deformation
Geological Society, London, Special Publications, 1996AbstractGrowing volcanoes load their basements, causing isostatic flexure, compaction and brittle and ductile deformation. Deformation of basement in turn exerts stress onto the edifice, which also responds by deforming. This deformation will be gradual or catastrophic, depending on the nature of the cone, and the properties of the underlying rocks ...
