The 1723 AD violent Strombolian and phreatomagatic eruption at Irazu volcano (Costa Rica) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The largest of the recorded historic eruptions at Irazú volcano began on February 16, 1723 and lasted until at least December 11. We here critically examine deposits of this eruption exposed on the summit of Irazú. Our reconstruction of the eruption is

Extended Fire Season Over Eastern Siberia Driven by Accumulated August–September Drought

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Siberian wildfires, a major disturbance to ecosystems and carbon cycles, have intensified in recent decades, yet long‐term changes in fire seasonality remain unclear. Here, using a refined fire‐season framework, we identify a pronounced shift in fire season characteristics over eastern Siberia during 2002–2023, marked by substantial ...

Stratospheric Temperature Adjustment Robustly Damps the State Dependence of CO2 Radiative Forcing

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract The equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS) depends on background climate state, a phenomenon known as state dependence. Recent studies highlighted state‐dependent CO2 radiative forcing as a mechanism for ECS state dependence, largely attributing it to enhanced instantaneous forcing (FINS) at higher CO2.

Lidar Ratios and Fluorescence Properties of Stratospheric Volcanic Sulfate

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract From January to June 2025, a stratospheric sulfate layer originating from the eruptions of the Ruang volcano in April 2024 could be observed with a multi‐wavelength Raman and fluorescence lidar over Leipzig, Germany. The aerosol‐optical depth of the stratospheric volcanic sulfate was <0.02 ${< } 0.02$, decreasing with time.

Seismic Exploration for Magmatic Brine Lenses: An Example From Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract The majority of metallic ore deposits are related to processes associated with ancient or modern volcanic systems. Beyond geothermal energy production, volcanoes also represent a potential resource of critical metals, including those required for carbon‐neutral technologies. Geothermal metals occur in subsurface fluid reservoirs fed by surface

Seismicity associated with dome growth and collapse at the Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat

open access: yes, 2018
Varied seismicity has accompanied growth and collapse of the lava dome of the Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat. Earthquakes have been classified as either volcano-tectonic, long-period or hybrid, and daily variations in the numbers of events have ...

Arctic and Tibetan Plateau Tundra Show Divergent Temperature and Precipitation Thresholds Under Climate Change

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract The Arctic and Tibetan Plateau (TP) have experienced pronounced warming and shifts in precipitation patterns, yet vegetation responses to climate change remain insufficiently understood. Here, we analyze the temperature and precipitation thresholds of limiting gross primary productivity (GPP) of tundra ecosystems in the Arctic and TP from 1982

Global Evidence for Off‐Axis Flexural Modification of Abyssal Hill Faults at Mid‐Ocean Ridges

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 16, 28 August 2026.
Abstract Young oceanic lithosphere flexes as axial topography decays across mid‐ocean ridge shoulders, yet this deformation has been quantified at only a few segments, leaving its global expression poorly constrained. We analyzed 50 across‐axis bathymetric profiles from 21 regions spanning slow to fast spreading rates, identified 1,201 abyssal‐hill ...
