Magma storage conditions beneath Dabbahu Volcano (Ethiopia) constrained by petrology, seismicity and satellite geodesy

Bulletin of Volcanology, 2012
A variety of methods exist to constrain sub-volcanic storage conditions of magmas. Petrological, seismological and satellite geodetic methods are integrated to determine storage conditions of peralkaline magmas beneath Dabbahu Volcano, Afar, Ethiopia. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analysis of volatile contents in melt inclusions trapped within

Data assimilation strategies for volcano geodesy

Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, 2017
Abstract Ground deformation observed using near-real time geodetic methods, such as InSAR and GPS, can provide critical information about the evolution of a magma chamber prior to volcanic eruption. Rapid advancement in numerical modeling capabilities has resulted in a number of finite element models targeted at better understanding the connection ...

Chapter 11 Volcano geodesy at the Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat: a review

Geological Society, London, Memoirs, 2014
Abstract Geodetic surveying is a core volcano monitoring technique. Measurements of how the crust deforms can give valuable insight into the mechanisms and processes that drive an eruption, and the way in which they change. Various geodetic observables, including ground deformation and gravity changes, have been recorded on Montserrat ...

Satellite geodesy for volcano monitoring in the Sentinel-1 and SAR constellation era

IGARSS 2019 - 2019 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2019
Globally, 800 million people live within 100 km of a volcano thought to have been active in the last 10,000 years. The basis of forecasting the short term progression of volcanic unrest or onset of eruption is high quality monitoring data, ideally analysed in near real time consistently over long time periods. Volcanic deformation – the displacement of

Volcano geodesy: The search for magma reservoirs and the formation of eruptive vents

Reviews of Geophysics, 1997
Routine geodetic measurements are made at only a few dozen of the world's 600 or so active volcanoes, even though these measurements have proven to be a reliable precursor of eruptions. The pattern and rate of surface displacement reveal the depth and rate of pressure increase within shallow magma reservoirs.
