Multi-View Kernels for Low-Dimensional Modeling of Seismic Events

open access: yes, 2017
The problem of learning from seismic recordings has been studied for years. There is a growing interest in developing automatic mechanisms for identifying the properties of a seismic event.

Difference in Slip Patterns Between Two Prehistoric Giant Earthquakes Along the Southern Kuril Trench

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract This study reveals different slip patterns of tsunami sources between two prehistoric giant earthquakes along the southern Kuril Trench, based on an integration of geological data and numerical simulations. The most recent giant earthquake occurred in the 17th century and its predecessor was in the 13th–14th century.

On heterogeneities with reduced viscosity in the mantle under the Kamchatka volcanoes according to seismological data [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin Volcanologique, 1973
A seismological study of the upper mantle under the Kamchatka volcanoes using body waves from nearby earthquakes has shown local heterogencities consisting of materials with reduced elastic properties at depths from 30 to 90 km.

Analysis and quasistatic FE modeling of long period impulsive events associated with explosions at Stromboli volcano (Italy)

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 1999
Broadband seismic measurements performed in 1995 and 1996 in the summit region of Stromboli are analyzed. The experiment in 1995 used an array of four Guralp seismometers and one Wielandt-Streckeisen seismometer.

Self‐Similarity of Seismic Moment Release to Volume Change Scaling for Volcanoes: A Comparison With Injection‐Induced Seismicity

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
Estimates of intruded magma volume are critical for forecasting volcanic unrest. Geodetic modeling can provide such estimates but is of limited use in submarine and highly vegetated settings.

The role of science in physical natural hazard assessment : report to the UK Government by the Natural Hazard Working Group [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Following the tragic Asian tsunami on 26 December 2004, the Prime Minister asked the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Sir David King, to convene a group of experts (the Natural Hazard Working Group) to advise on the mechanisms that could and ...

Pattern of Inner‐Core Differential Rotation From Long‐Term Earthquake Sequences and USArray Network

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 1, 16 January 2026.
Abstract How the differential rotation of the Earth's inner core (IC) has changed over time provides insights into the dynamics of the Earth's interior. Analyses of repeating earthquakes (doublets) have yielded different models. Here we present an event‐based investigation using individual events from long‐term earthquake sequences, which improves ...

Automatic Earthquake Declustering Using the Nearest‐Neighbor Distance

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract In the widely adopted description of seismic occurrence, earthquakes are categorized as either background or triggered events. In this work, we present a fully automated, non‐parametric algorithm for distinguishing between these two categories, a process known as seismic declustering, based on the widely used nearest‐neighbor (NN) metric.

Analytical models of volcanic ellipsoidal expansion sources

open access: yesAnnals of Geophysics, 2013
Modeling non-double-couple earthquakes and surficial deformation in volcanic and geothermal areas usually involves expansion sources. Given an ensemble of ellipsoidal or tensile expansion sources and double-couple ones, it is straightforward to obtain ...

Seismo-Acoustic Characterization of Mount Cleveland Volcano Explosions

open access: yesFrontiers in Earth Science, 2020
Volcanic explosions can produce large, ash-rich plumes that pose great hazard to aviation, yet may often have few precursory geophysical signals. Mount Cleveland is one of the most active volcanoes in the Aleutian Arc, Alaska (United States) with at ...
