PROVINCIALISING BERLIN IN MENSCHEN IM HOTEL

open access: yesGerman Life and Letters, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this article, I take the peculiar source of Vicki Baum's Menschen im Hotel (1929) in a Southern Moravian town as a starting point to reveal the ways in which the hierarchies between metropolis and province are negotiated and complicated by the novel.

Extreme Body Condition Index Values in Small Mammals

open access: yesLife
The body condition index (BCI) values in small mammals are important in understanding their survival and reproduction. The upper values could be related to the Chitty effect (presence of very heavy individuals), while the minimum ones are little known ...

Water vole (Arvicola amphibius) abundance in grassland habitats of Glasgow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Water vole (Arvicola amphibius) populations have undergone a serious decline throughout the UK, and yet a stronghold of these small mammals is found in the greater Easterhouse area of Glasgow.

A nuclear families word list for French

open access: yesThe Modern Language Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This between‐languages replication study relates the development and testing of a nuclear, families‐based, pedagogical word list for French as was previously done for English. A word family includes base and inflected words (or lemmas) plus derivations.

Organic farms as refuges for small mammal biodiversity in agro ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Habitat fragmentation, the process by which relatively continuous habitats is broken into smaller pieces, occurs in natural systems but is to a high degree also human-induced through landscape use.

Nutrient addition and herbivore exclusion alter plant traits and biomass via distinct mechanisms: intraspecific variability vs species turnover

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Soil nutrients and vertebrate herbivory are key ecological factors with opposite and interactive effects on grassland plant traits and biomass. Partitioning trait changes into species turnover and intraspecific change provides a mechanistic linkage between trait shifts and biomass responses.

Flea infestation reduces the life span of the common vole [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Parasitism is often a source of variation in host's fitness components. Understanding and estimating its relative importance for fitness components of hosts is fundamental from physiological, ecological and evolutionary perspectives.

Mixtures of Multivariate Power Exponential Distributions

open access: yes, 2015
An expanded family of mixtures of multivariate power exponential distributions is introduced. While fitting heavy-tails and skewness has received much attention in the model-based clustering literature recently, we investigate the use of a distribution ...

Population dynamics of tundra voles in relation to configuration of willow thickets in southern arctic tundra

open access: yesPolar Biology, 2011
The areal extent and configuration of thickets of willow shrubs are currently changing in the Arctic both as an effect of global warming and changed browsing pressure of reindeer. These changes have been predicted to impact the distribution and abundance
