An anti‐diffusive volume of fluid method for interfacial fluid flows

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, 2011
AbstractA volume of fluid (VOF) method is developed combining a first‐order limited downwind scheme with higher order accurate schemes. The method is characterized by retaining a sharp fluid interface and a reduction in numerical diffusion near the interface, but avoids complicated geometrical reconstruction as occurs in most volume tracing algorithms.

Parallel Simulation of Multiphase Flows Using the Volume-of-Fluid Method

ASME-JSME-KSME 2011 Joint Fluids Engineering Conference: Volume 1, Symposia – Parts A, B, C, and D, 2011
This article numerically investigates the appearance of instabilities in two planar coflowing liquids sheets. As a function of the momentum ratio, two different regimes are distinguished. At low momentum ratios the frequency of the waves appearing in the primary atomization region are influenced by the liquid velocity, whereas an asymptotic regime is ...

Simulation of Anode Bubble: Volume of Fluid Method

2014
In an aluminum reduction cell, bubbles are generated on the anode surfaces. Before they get out of the bath, they linger over between gap of the anode and the cathode, which leads to additional voltage drop. The alumina concentration adjacent to the anode is also affected.

An Unsplit Lagrangian Advection Scheme for Volume of Fluid Method

Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2010
An Unsplit Lagrangian Advection (ULA) scheme for Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method is presented in this article. The ULA scheme is developed based on an algorithm of Piecewise Linear Interface Construction (PLIC). The volume fluxes between cells are calculated through solving the new equation of the linear interfaces in cells in the ULA scheme.

Modeling defects in castings using a volume of fluid method

International Journal of Numerical Methods for Heat & Fluid Flow, 2014
Purpose – A single-domain multi-phase model is developed for macrosegregation and shrinkage pipe formation in castings, as functions of buoyancy- and shrinkage-induced flow. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Using a volume of ...

A volume-of-fluid method for incompressible free surface flows

International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, 2009
Summary: This paper proposes a hybrid volume-of-fluid (VOF) level-set method for simulating incompressible two-phase flows. Motion of the free surface is represented by a VOF algorithm that uses high resolution differencing schemes to algebraically preserve both the sharpness of interface and the boundedness of volume fraction.

Volume-of-Fluid Methods for Partial Differential Equations

2001
In this paper, we give an overview of a set of methods being developed for solving classical PDE’s in irregular geometries, or in the presence of free boundaries. In this approach, the irregular geometry is represented on a rectangular grid by specifying the intersection of each grid cell with the region on one or the other side of the boundary.
