Parallel hexahedral meshing from volume fractions

Engineering with Computers, 2012
In this work, we introduce a new method for generating Lagrangian computational meshes from Eulerian-based data. We focus specifically on shock physics problems that are relevant to Eulerian-based codes that generate volume fraction data on a Cartesian grid. A step-by-step procedure for generating an all-hexahedral mesh is presented.

The Volume Fraction Concept in the Porous Media Theory

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1997
AbstractIn this paper the volume fraction concept in the porous media theory is considered. First, the historical development of this important concept is traced. Thereupon, the concept of volume fractions is formulated and the transport theorems, which govern the transformations of volume elements from one placement to another, are derived.

Absorbed fractions for alpha particles in ellipsoidal volumes

Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2013
Internal dosimetry of alpha particles is gaining attention due to the increasing applications in cancer treatment and also for the assessment of environmental contamination from radionuclides. We developed a Monte Carlo simulation in GEANT4 in order to calculate the absorbed fractions for monoenergetic alpha particles in the energy interval between 0.1

Effect of volume fraction on granular avalanche dynamics

Physical Review E, 2014
We study the evolution and failure of a granular slope as a function of prepared volume fraction, ϕ(0). We rotated an initially horizontal layer of granular material (0.3-mm-diam glass spheres) to a 45° angle while we monitor the motion of grains from the side and top with high-speed video cameras.

Anisotropic Surface Measures as Limits of Volume Fractions

2018
In this paper we consider the new characterization of the perimeter of a measurable set in \(\mathbb {R}^{n}\) recently studied by Ambrosio, Bourgain, Brezis and Figalli. We modify their approach by using, instead of cubes, covering families made by translations of a given open bounded set with Lipschitz boundary.

Local Volume Fraction Fluctuations

2002
One of the most important morphological descriptors of heterogeneous materials is the volume fraction of the phases or, in the case of porous media, the porosity (i.e., the volume fraction of the fluid phase). Although the volume fraction is constant for statistically homogeneous media, on a spatially local level it fluctuates.

Volume fraction analysis of human coronal dentin

Calcified Tissue Research, 1969
A systematic point-count method was utilized to determine the volume fractions of peritubular and intertubular matrix in human coronal dentin. Contrary to previous thought, it was found that peritubular dentin represents a relatively large fraction of human coronal dentin, particularly in the inner one-half of the dentin, where the relative volumes of ...
