The influence of bone volume fraction and ash fraction on bone strength and modulus

Bone, 2001
Although bone strength and modulus are known to be influenced by both volume fraction and mineral content (ash fraction), the relative influence of these two parameters remains unknown. Single-parameter power law functions are used widely to relate bone volume or ash fraction to bone strength and elastic modulus. In this study we evaluate the potential

Void volume fraction of granular scaffolds

Small, 2022
Abstract Void volume fraction (VVF) of granular biomaterials is a global measurement frequently used to characterize void space. There is currently no gold standard for measuring the VVF of granular scaffolds made in lab. To help the biomaterials field, we provide a library of different simulated scaffolds with known VVF for easy look ...

Determination of Fiber Volume Fractions by Optical Numeric Volume Fraction Analysis

Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, 1989
A method for determining the fiber volume fraction in continuous fiber composites by automatically counting the fiber ends per unit area in digitized microscope images of representative cross sections has been developed. Since fiber counts are digital variables, the accuracy of the method is essentially independent of small variations in microscope ...

Absorbed fractions for electrons in ellipsoidal volumes

Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2010
We applied a Monte Carlo simulation in Geant4 in order to calculate the absorbed fractions for monoenergetic electrons in the energy interval between 10 keV and 2 MeV, uniformly distributed in ellipsoids made from soft tissue. For each volume, we simulated a spherical shape, four oblate and four prolate ellipsoids, and one scalene shape.

Absorbed fractions for photons in ellipsoidal volumes

Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2009
We studied through Monte Carlo simulation in Geant4 the absorbed fractions for photons, characterized by energies ranging from 10 keV to 1000 keV, which can be emitted by gamma radionuclides uniformly distributed in ellipsoidal volumes of soft tissue. The same analytical relationship between absorbed fraction and the 'generalized radius' as introduced ...

Volume Fraction Effects in Electroacoustic Measurements

Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2001
We measured the dynamic mobility of a polystyrene latex at 1 MHz as a function of volume fraction using the ESA-8000. The volume fraction dependence is compared with a semiempirical equation as well as with some theoretical predictions. It turns out that our polystyrene latex exhibits a volume fraction dependence much weaker than that predicted by any ...

The fallacy of high volume fraction

Composites, 1973
Abstract There are theoretical as well as practical reasons why a high glass content in glass fibre reinforced plastics is not always desirable. An optimum glass content is calculated to give maximum flexural strength and stiffness for simple beams and plates, this content being governed by similar rules to those that apply for the optimum ...

Parallel hexahedral meshing from volume fractions

Engineering with Computers, 2012
In this work, we introduce a new method for generating Lagrangian computational meshes from Eulerian-based data. We focus specifically on shock physics problems that are relevant to Eulerian-based codes that generate volume fraction data on a Cartesian grid. A step-by-step procedure for generating an all-hexahedral mesh is presented.

The Volume Fraction Concept in the Porous Media Theory

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 1997
AbstractIn this paper the volume fraction concept in the porous media theory is considered. First, the historical development of this important concept is traced. Thereupon, the concept of volume fractions is formulated and the transport theorems, which govern the transformations of volume elements from one placement to another, are derived.

Extracellular Volume Fractions in Chronic Myocardial Infarction

Investigative Radiology, 2012
The aim of this study was to assess and delineate chronic myocardial infarction (CMI) using precontrast and postcontrast T1 mapping techniques including quantification of extracellular volume fractions (ECVs).A total of 26 patients with CMI were examined at 1.5 T applying a modified Look-Locker Inversion Recovery sequence before and 10 minutes after ...
