Volume of Fluid Method: A Brief Review

Journal of the Indian Institute of Science
Understanding and predicting multiphase flows is of great relevance due to the ubiquitous nature of such flows in both nature and in many industrial applications. Rapid development of high speed computers and problem-specific algorithms in the last 2 decades has enabled the study of multiphase flows through numerical simulations. In this paper, we give

On a Family of Unsplit Advection Algorithms for Volume-of-Fluid Methods

SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, 2013
Volume-of-fluid (VOF) methods are widely-used for the interface tracking problem, yet rigorous analyses of them are rare. This paper presents such an analysis for incompressible flows by combining the theories of ordinary differential equations, differential geometry, and Boolean algebra. Based on the concept of donating region (DR) [Q. Zhang, SIAM Rev.

Simulation of Anode Bubble: Volume of Fluid Method

2014
In an aluminum reduction cell, bubbles are generated on the anode surfaces. Before they get out of the bath, they linger over between gap of the anode and the cathode, which leads to additional voltage drop. The alumina concentration adjacent to the anode is also affected.

A Fluid-Structure Interaction Solver coupled to a Volume of Fluid method

2016
The study of Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) is becoming of great interest in many engineering applications. In this work we propose a new model to study the deformation of solid structures induced by a two-phase flow. We use a monolithic approach for the FSI problem while a Volume Of Fluid method (VOF) is considered for the reconstruction and ...

Volume-of-Fluid Methods for Partial Differential Equations

2001
In this paper, we give an overview of a set of methods being developed for solving classical PDE’s in irregular geometries, or in the presence of free boundaries. In this approach, the irregular geometry is represented on a rectangular grid by specifying the intersection of each grid cell with the region on one or the other side of the boundary.
