Synthese, 2009This paper examines and finds wanting the arguments against van Fraassen’s voluntarism, the view that the only constraint of rationality is consistency. Foundationalists claim that if we have no grounds or rationale for a belief or rule, rationality demands that we suspend it.

The concept of coerced voluntarism is developed to analyze the micropolitical dynamics of drug abuse treatment at a community agency offering outpatient counseling services. Clients are coerced by criminal justice agents into “volunteering” for treatment and are generally unwilling to make serious commitments to therapeutic objectives.
