Stochastic von Bertalanffy models, with applications to fish recruitment
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2007We consider three individual-based models describing growth in stochastic environments. Stochastic differential equations (SDEs) with identical von Bertalanffy deterministic parts are formulated, with a stochastic term which decreases, remains constant, or increases with organism size, respectively.

Minor extension of the von Bertalanffy growth theory
Fisheries Research, 1990The growth of “Growing Sealife”™ plastic squid was tested against the principles of the von Bertalanffy growth theory. The von Bertalanffy growth curve fits the data well on visual inspection, although the Schnute curve actually provides a statistically superior fit.

The scope and limitations of Von Bertalanffy’s systems theory
South African Journal of Philosophy, 2002The Systems Theory is a complex theory (yet it is not identical to recent theories of complexity). The intention of this qualification is to demonstrate that the concept of a system is a complex basic concept of scientific thinking. This means that it is defined in terms of various elementary basic concepts brought together in its explication.

Ludwig von Bertalanffy's early system approach
Systems Research and Behavioral Science, 2009AbstractMost of what Bertalanffy published in the field of ‘organismic’ biology was written in German and is thus not widely known. In order to understand the development and meaning of his ‘general system theory’, those early works are essential. In this paper, I therefore focus on key aspects of his ‘system theory of life’, both on the level of ...

A Motion for the Retirement of the Von Bertalanffy Function
Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1980The reasons for the continued use of the von Bertalanffy equation are examined. It is suggested that these reasons are insufficient to overcome the drawbacks of this function and alternative procedures are recommended.Key words: von Bertalanffy, growth, yield per recruit

von Bertalanffy growth model in a random environment
Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1999The well-known von Bertalanffy growth model for describing age-length relationship is formulated in a randomly fluctuating environment. The fluctuations in the system are assumed to be described by a Gaussian white noise stochastic process. The resulting model, in terms of a stochastic differential equation, is solved analytically.

The systems approach ? A. Bogdanov and L. von Bertalanffy
Studies in Soviet Thought, 1985We undertake the comparison between Ludwig von Bertalanffy's General Systems Theory and Alexandr Bodganov's Tektology as two theories proposing a holistic interpretation of reality and claiming to solve problems which are unsolvable via conventional philosophic and scientific theories and methodologies.
