Vortex-induced vibrations at subcritical Re

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2005
Flow past a stationary cylinder becomes unstable at Re$\,{\sim}\,47$. Flow-induced vibrations of an elastically mounted cylinder, of low non-dimensional mass, is investigated at subcritical Reynolds numbers. A stabilized finite-element formulation is used to solve the incompressible flow equations and the cylinder motion in two dimensions. The cylinder

Vortex-Induced Vibration of Flexible Cylinders in Cross-Flow

Annual Review of Fluid Mechanics
This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the literature on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of flexible circular cylinders in cross-flow. It delves into the details of the underlying physics governing the VIV dynamics of cylinders characterized by ...

Vortex-induced vibration characteristics of rigidly connected four-cylinder system and nonlinear energy sinks for vibration suppression

The Physics of Fluids
In order to study the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of rigidly connected four-cylinder systems and the suppression of vortex-induced vibration by nonlinear energy sinks (NESs), a fluid–structure coupling dynamic simulation model of a two-

Vortex-induced vibrations of a sphere

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2005
There are many studies on the vortex-induced vibrations of a cylindrical body, but almost none concerned with such vibrations for a sphere, despite the fact that tethered bodies are a common configuration. In this paper, we study the dynamics of an elastically mounted or tethered sphere in a steady flow, employing displacement, force and vorticity ...

Vortex-induced vibration and energy harvesting of cylinder system with nonlinear springs

The Physics of Fluids
Vortex-induced vibration is a common fluid–structure coupling phenomenon in ocean engineering. As a nonlinear stiffness structure caused by anisotropic deformation and support gap, nonlinear spring is of great significance in the field of vortex-induced ...

Vortex‐induced vibration measurement of a long‐span suspension bridge through noncontact sensing strategies

Comput. Aided Civ. Infrastructure Eng., 2021
Long‐span bridges are susceptible to vortex‐induced vibration (VIV), which affects the serviceability and safety of bridges when the vibration amplitude is too large and lasts for a long time.

Multiple lock-ins in vortex-induced vibration of a filament

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2021
The vortex-induced vibration of a flexible filament attached behind a stationary cylinder is studied in the two-dimensional, laminar flow regime. We explore the response of the filament for a wide range of flexibility and inertia.

Vortex‐Induced Vibrations of Flexible Bridges

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1990
One of the recurring aerodynamic concerns of both existing and projected new and flexible bridges, typically those of long span, is the possibility that the deck may be set into periodic oscillation by cross winds of relatively low velocity. This general phenomenon, regardless of the specific details of the local flow about the structures, has been ...

Reduction of Stack Vortex Induced Vibrations

Volume 3: Design and Analysis, 2013
A stack installation experienced vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) while in-service. The magnitude of the vibrations was severe enough that cracking in the welds at the stack bases was experienced shortly after their installation. Initially, straight strakes were placed on the stacks, based on field serviceability, per API 560.

Vortex induced vibration optimizing system

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2008
There is disclosed a system comprising a structure, a vortex induced vibration monitoring system, adapted to monitor a vortex induced vibration level of the structure, a tensioner connected to the structure, and a controller adapted to calculate a tension on the structure to optimize the vortex induced vibration value of the structure.
