Vortex Induced Vibrations of Finned Cylinders

Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2008
This article presents the results of a numerical simulation on the vortex induced vibration of various finned cylinders at low Reynolds number. The non-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations and continuity equation were adopted to simulate the fluid around the cylinder.

Lock-in in vortex-induced vibration

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 2016
The phenomenon of lock-in in vortex-induced vibration of a circular cylinder is investigated in the laminar flow regime ($20\leqslant Re\leqslant 100$). Direct time integration (DTI) and linear stability analysis (LSA) of the governing equations are carried out via a stabilized finite element method.

A Review of Vortex-Induced Vibrations

Earth and Space 2010, 2010
Vortex-induced vibration occurs when the vortex-shedding frequency for flow past a cylinder matches with the natural frequency of the cylinder. The result can be a transverse vibration or an in-line vibration of the cylinder, or a combination of the two.

Vortex induced vibration of tall buildings

Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1992
Abstract For a tall building of which aspect ratio is larger than 8, the resonant velocity of vortex induced vibration or the onset velocity of galloping can be within the design wind velocity. In this paper, the vortex induced vibration and the galloping of tall buildings with aspect ratio, H/√BD=10 with side ratios, D/B = 1 2 to 3 are ...

Vortex-Induced Vibrations of Structures

1981
Vortex-induced oscillations, often of concern when a bluff structure is exposed to fluid cross-flow, are considered herein using a semi-empirical modeling approach. Based on the fluid momentum theorem, the model involves a highly simplified abstraction of the complex flow field, and major assumptions concerning the nature of the coupling between the ...

Maximum vortex-induced vibrations of a square prism

Wind and Structures, 2013
This paper presents an experimental investigation concerning the peak amplitudes of oscillation of a square prism due to Vortex-Induced-Vibrations (VIV) as a function of the mass damping parameter (the so called Griffin--plot); and being, respectively, the non-dimensional mass and the mechanical (structural) damping ratio. With this purpose in mind, an

Vortex-Induced Vibration of Deepwater Risers

Offshore Technology Conference, 1998
Abstract This paper presents an overview of deepwater riser vortex-induced vibration analysis, including vortex-induced vibration prediction, testing considerations, and suppression device testing and selection. Both single and multiple riser configurations are addressed. For each subject the philosophy and thoughts
