MAGTWIST: A Magnetically‐Driven Rotary Actuator Using a Traveling‐Wave With Integrated Stiffness Tunability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MAGTWIST: A compact magnetic rotary actuator, enabling smooth, stepless rotation, and on‐demand locking. Inspired by peristalsis, a soft polymer belt generates a traveling‐wave, enabling 270° rotation when heated. Cooling stiffens the belt, locking it in position and enabling it to withstand high loads.

Harbor seal vibrissa morphology suppresses vortex-induced vibrations [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 2010
SUMMARYHarbor seals (Phoca vitulina) often live in dark and turbid waters, where their mystacial vibrissae, or whiskers, play an important role in orientation. Besides detecting and discriminating objects by direct touch, harbor seals use their whiskers to analyze water movements, for example those generated by prey fish or by conspecifics.

A New Threshold Switching Device With Tunable Negative Differential Resistance Based on ErMnO3 Polymorphs

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymorph engineering in ErMnO3 enables low‐voltage, forming‐free threshold switching with tunable negative differential resistance. Conducting orthorhombic regions embedded in an insulating hexagonal matrix provide controlled Joule‐heating‐enhanced Poole–Frenkel transport. The hexagonal phase prevents excessive heating and breakdown.

Optimal Energy Harvesting From Vortex-Induced Vibrations of Cables [PDF]

open access: yesVolume 6: Ocean Space Utilization; Ocean Renewable Energy, 2016
We propose to use flexible cables instead of rigid rods in devices extracting energy from Vortex-Induced Vibrations (VIVs). We use a linear equation of motion for the structure coupled with a nonlinear wake oscillator and numerical tools to simulate the VIVs of hanging strings/cables.

Research on Suppression of Vortex Induced Vibration of Flexible Cylinder with Cactus-shaped Cross Section

open access: yesShiyou jixie, 2021
The marine standpipe is a long, slender, flexible structure that connects the surface work platform and the subsea wellhead, and it is prone to vortex-induced vibration under the ocean currents.

Drug‐Free Thrombolysis Mediated by Physically Activated Micro/Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of particle‐mediated thrombolytic effects (thermal, mechanical, and chemical) and their activating physical stimuli (light, ultrasound, and magnetic field) in drug‐free thrombolysis. ABSTRACT Thrombus‐associated disorders rank among the world's leading causes of death, with ischemic heart disease and stroke as the main contributors.
