Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Investigation of Flow Characteristics in Valveless Piezoelectric Pumps with Airfoil Baffles at Varying Angles of Attack

open access: yesApplied Sciences
To investigate the impact of airfoil angle of attack on the output performance of a valveless piezoelectric pump with airfoil baffles, this study conducted comprehensive performance tests and full-flow field simulations of piezoelectric pumps across a ...

Vortex equilibria in flow past a plate

open access: yes, 2008
Families of vortex equilibria, with constant vorticity, in steady flow past a flat plate are computed numerically. An equilibrium configuration, which can be thought of as a desingularized point vortex, involves a single symmetric vortex patch located ...

Aerodynamics of vortex ingestion for aero-engines [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The potential impact of inlet flow distortion on the stability and performance of aircraft engines remains a key concern for engine-airframe integration. Current and future configurations, such as Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UCAVs), and possible civil

Quantification of transport across the boundary of the lower stratospheric vortex during Arctic winter 2002/2003 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Strong perturbations of the Arctic stratosphere during the winter 2002/2003 by planetary waves led to enhanced stretching and folding of the vortex. On two occasions the vortex in the lower stratosphere split into two secondary vortices that re-merged ...

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Indoor Air Pollutant (PM 10, CO2) Reduction Using a Vortex Exhaust Ventilation System in a Mock-Up Room

open access: yesBuildings
In this study, a performance comparison experiment with a vortex exhaust installed at the end of a ventilation device to enhance the effect induced by reducing indoor pollutants was conducted. The experiment was carried out by constructing a mock-up room

The impact of the mixing properties within the Antarctic stratospheric vortex on ozone loss in spring [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Calculations of equivalent length from an artificial advected tracer provide new insight into the isentropic transport processes occurring within the Antarctic stratospheric vortex. These calculations show two distinct regions of approximately equal area:

Workflow for Design of Experiments‐Based Modeling of Species Transport and Growth Kinetics in GaN Hydride Vapor Phase Epitaxy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A novel workflow for investigating hydride vapor phase epitaxy for GaN bulk crystal growth is proposed. It combines Design of experiments (DoE) with physical simulations of mass transport and crystal growth kinetics, serving as an intermediate step between DoE and experiments.

Microstructure Reconstruction in Battery Electrodes Using Machine Learning Based on Low‐Voltage Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy Tomography Images

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐voltage FIB‐SEM tomography combined with a image preprocessing pipeline improves phase contrast and enables reliable machine‐learning segmentation of conductive networks in lithium‐ion battery electrodes. Structural descriptors are extracted from segmented images, done semimanually and automated, and compared.
