An unusual atmospheric vortex street

Environmental Fluid Mechanics, 2019
Atmospheric vortex streets quite often form in the wake of tall islands in the marine atmospheric boundary layer. Most satellite pictures of this phenomenon show that two rows of staggered, counter-rotating vortices are aligned more or less in a straight line downstream of the islands, like Karman vortex streets behind cylindrical obstacles.

Single Vortex Streets on the Sphere

ASME 2008 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference, Parts A and B, 2008
We study arrangements of point vortices on a sphere in the form of a single von Ka´rma´n vortex street, with and without the addition of pole vortices using the configuration matrix approach recently introduced by (1) and (2) on the sphere. We derive the general form of the von Ka´rma´n matrix thereby obtaining all possible vortex strengths for which ...

Elimination of Vortex Streets in Bluff-Body Flows

Physical Review Letters, 2008
We present an effective technique for suppressing the vortex-induced vibrations of bluff bodies by eliminating the von Kármán street formed in their wake. Specifically, we find that small amounts of combined windward suction and leeward blowing around the body modify the wake instability and lead to suppression of the fluctuating lift force.

Interaction of a starting vortex as well as a vortex street with a traveling shock wave

AIAA Journal, 1965
The passage of a shock front and the associated drift flow over a two-dimensional airfoil, at an angle of attack mounted in a shock tube, generated a columnar spiral starting vortex that interacted with the normal reflected shock. Interferometric investigations of this interaction extended considerably earlier schlieren observations by Hollingsworth ...
