Voter Turnout and Political Rents [PDF]

AbstractIs the decline in voter turnout an indicator of a worse health of a representative democracy? We build a simple probabilistic‐voting model with endogenous turnout to address this question. We find that a lower turnout caused by a higher cost of voting implies higher political rents.

Food Tastes in the United States: Convergence or Divergence?

ABSTRACT This study investigates how food consumption tastes have changed in recent decades across the United States. Using NielsenIQ data for over 77 million transactions, there is evidence of divergence in food tastes across regions from 2007 to 2016 and across households of different income, education, and race/ethnicity groups.

Voter turnout and the size of government [PDF]

This paper uses Swedish and Finnish municipal data to investigate the effect of changes in voter turnout on the tax rate, public spending and vote-shares. A reform in Sweden in 1970, which overall lowered the cost of voting, is applied as an instrument for voter turnout in local elections. The reform increased voter turnout in Sweden.
