Vowel elision is a common phonological process whereby an unstressed /ə/ (schwa) vowel is deleted during pronunciation. In three syllable words, the deleted /ə/ occurs in the medial posttonic position (different /dIfr schwant/ → [dIfr schwant]). In two syllable words, the deleted /ə/ occurs in the first syllable (police /polis/ → [plis]).

Vowel raising, deletion and diphthongization in Kozani Greek

This study examined three vocalic phenomena in Kozani Greek, unstressed high-vowel deletion, unstressed mid-vowel raising, and stressed mid-vowel diphthongization. Eight dialectal speakers were recorded conversing freely with a native speaker of the dialect.
