Proton Exchange Membrane Performance Characterization in VRFB

ECS Transactions, 2012
The proton exchange membrane is widely used in vanadium redox flow battery as electrolyte separator and proton conductors. In this paper, two commercial proton exchange membranes, Nafion and 3Mion, have been investigated. High frequency resistance and water and acid uptake of the PEMs are measured after equilibration in sulfuric acid of different ...

EIS Diagnostics for Fuel Cells/VRFBs

2022
This chapter reviews the application of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to fuel cells (FCs) and redox flow batteries (RFBs). The work is focused specifically on diagnostic aspects and large-scale systems. The basics of EIS are briefly summarized, alongside their theoretical premises, good practices and typical laboratory equipment.

The Importance of Temperature Compensation in Analysis of VRFB Performance Data

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2019
To enable a high penetration of renewable energy it is necessary to include multiple-hour energy storage systems. Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) are already proving one of the most suitable and versatile technologies in this regard. They are intrinsically safe (1), do not degrade through cycling (2) and can be recycled or reused to a very ...

Spectroscopic Study of Vanadium Electrolytes in Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB)

ECS Transactions, 2013
In this paper, we characterize the absorbance spectra and explain the spectroscopic behavior typically found in VRFB electrolytes at various mixture ratios of VII/VIII and VIV/VV mixtures in H2SO4. We demonstrate that the linear behavior of absorbance with respect to mixture ratio for the anolyte (VII/VIII) can be used to determine mixture ratio.

Deconvolution of electrochemical impedance data for the monitoring of electrode degradation in VRFB

Electrochimica Acta, 2020
Abstract Understanding degradation phenomena occurring during the operation of vanadium redox-flow batteries (VRFB) requires a measurement technique which allows for differentiating the overall performance losses into individual performance losses of the cell components. For this purpose, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a valuable and

Comparing Electrode Overpotential Contributions in Vrfbs Amongst Multiple Techniques

ECS Meeting Abstracts
Redox flow batteries (RFBs) offer a potential remedy for the escalating need for energy storage amid the ongoing transition from carbon-intensive fossil energy to renewable energy sources. Yet, many RFB chemistries are shown to have low energy efficiencies which can be attributed, in part, to ineffective electrode materials.

Electrochemical Characteristics of Graphite Felt Electrode By Surface Modification for Vrfbs

ECS Meeting Abstracts, 2016
Recently, thereĀ has been a lot of research in vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) which is used as a large scale energy storage system and power supplier. Especially, graphite electrodes play an important role because they do directly act as electrochemical reaction in cell. In this study, commercial graphite felts were prepared by heat treatment in the
