Jednym z powikłań zawału serca jest pęknięcie przegrody międzykomorowej. Pęknięcie najczęściej dokonuje się między trzecim a piątym dniem od zawału. To powikłanie dotyczy ok. 1% pacjentów z zawałem STEMI. Pozawałowe VSD jest stanem bezpośredniego zagrożenia życia i wiąże się z dużym odsetkiem śmiertelności.
