Behavioral adaptations of Arctic fox, Vulpes lagopus in response to climate change [PDF]

open access: yesCaspian Journal of Environmental Sciences
Climate change is rapidly altering Arctic ecosystems, forcing native species to adapt. This study investigated the behavioral adaptations of Arctic foxes, Vulpes lagopus in response to climate change, focusing on changes in hunting patterns, den site ...

Predators and scavengers: Polar bears as marine carrion providers

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2026, Issue 1, January 2026.
Scavenging is a foraging strategy widely used across the animal kingdom and apex predators provide a large amount of energy in a food web by provisioning carrion. In the harsh environmental conditions of the Arctic, apex predators such as polar bears Ursus maritimus can provide scavenging opportunities for many species. Carrion can act as a buffer when

Integrating predator energetic balance, risk‐taking behaviour and microhabitat in functional response to untangle indirect interactions in a multispecies vertebrate community

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 1, Page 70-82, January 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Predator–prey interactions in natural communities are complex, with predators often exploiting multiple prey types and generating indirect interactions among them. Ecological theory has traditionally modelled these interactions using functional response models which are

Cave Palaeolithic of the Ural Mountains – a review

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 55, Issue 1, Page 4-28, January 2026.
The Ural Mountains are of fundamental importance for studying early human migrations along the geographical limits between Europe and Asia. Geological processes and past climates gave rise to numerous caves, mostly in Palaeozoic carbonate formations.

Food web reconstruction of Barmaky, the oldest post‐LGM hunter‐gatherer site in north‐western Ukraine

open access: yesBoreas, Volume 55, Issue 1, Page 182-197, January 2026.
The site of Barmaky currently marks the oldest Epigravettian occupation of north‐western Ukraine shortly after the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), dated to around 19 cal. ka BP. Stable isotope analyses of bone collagen from six terrestrial mammals and two bird species show a comparatively highly structured palaeo‐food web.

Reducing bias in shorebird nest survival rates across a large Arctic landscape

open access: yesIbis, Volume 168, Issue 1, Page 25-41, January 2026.
Reproductive success is a key demographic parameter that can have profound impacts on a species' population trend. Indeed, poor reproductive success has been suggested as a contributing factor to the declines observed in many species of birds, including Arctic‐breeding shorebirds.

Identification and genetic characterization of Sarcocystis arctica and Sarcocystis lutrae in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from Baltic States and Spain

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2018
Background Typically, carnivores serve as definitive hosts for Sarcocystis spp. parasites; currently, their role as intermediate hosts is being elucidated.

Genetic consequences of conservation action: Restoring the arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) population in Scandinavia

open access: yesBiological Conservation, 2020
The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus) population in Fennoscandia experienced a drastic bottleneck in the late 19th century as a result of high hunting pressure. In the 1990s, despite nearly 70 years of protection, the population showed no signs of recovery. In

Siniketun (Vulpes lagopus) nahkaominaisuuksien, rehuhyötysuhteen ja koon väliset geneettiset tunnusluvut

open access: yesSuomen Maataloustieteellisen Seuran Tiedote, 2014
Siniketun tärkeimmät jalostustavoitteet ovat pentue- ja nahkakoko sekä nahan laatu (värin puhtaus, tummuus ja yleislaatu). Merkittävin nahasta maksettavaan hintaa vaikuttava tekijä on koko. Rehu on puolestaan tuotantosuunnan suurin kustannustekijä ja rehukustannusten oletetaan nousevan edelleen.
