A revision of vulture feeding classification

open access: yesZoology, 2021
Pioneering fieldwork identified the existence of three feeding groups in vultures: gulpers, rippers and scrappers. Gulpers engulf soft tissue from carcasses and rippers tear off pieces of tough tissue (skin, tendons, muscle), whereas scrappers peck on small pieces of meat they find on and around carcasses.

Ultrafast Room‐Temperature Nanofabrication via Ozone‐Based Gas‐Phase Metal‐Assisted Chemical Etching for High‐Performance Silicon Photodetectors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ozone‐based gas‐phase metal‐assisted chemical etching enables unprecedented room‐temperature fabrication of high‐quality silicon nanowires. The superior oxidation potential of O3 drives rapid vertical etching (1 µm min−1) while maintaining exceptional structural integrity. The pristine nanowire surfaces enable high‐performance core‐shell photodetectors

Variation and development of the turtle chondrocranium, with a description of the common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus, Kinosternidae, Cryptodira, Testudines)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView., 2023
Abstract Based on histological cross‐sections, the chondrocranium of the common musk turtle (Sternotherus odoratus) was reconstructed, described, and compared with other turtles. It differs from that of other turtle chondrocrania by possessing elongated, slightly dorsally orientated nasal capsules with three dorsolateral foramina, which might be ...

Raptors Mortality in Northwest Rajasthan, India (2017–2022)

open access: yesПернатые хищники и их охрана, 2023
A major contributing factor in declining populations of vultures is believed to be the widespread use of drugs such as Diclofenac, once commonly-used as a livestock anti-inflammatory drug. Use of Diclofenac is now banned in India.

Substrate Engineering for Durable Omniphobic Liquid‐Like Surfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The significant yet less investigated role of substrates in determining the liquid‐repellency and mechanical durability of liquid‐like surfaces (LLSs) is explored. Thick and crack‐free sol–gel silica intermediary layers are developed that can smoothen substrate asperity roughness even at the micron scale, enabling omniphobic polydimethylsiloxane‐based ...

Responses of turkey vultures to unmanned aircraft systems vary by platform

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
A challenge that conservation practitioners face is manipulating behavior of nuisance species. The turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) can cause substantial damage to aircraft if struck.

Influence of Anthropogenic Noise for Predicting Cinereous Vulture Nest Distribution

open access: yes, 2020
Natural landscapes are increasingly under anthropogenic pressures, and concern about human impacts on wildlife populations is becoming particularly relevant in the case of natural areas affected by roads.

Ternary Synergy in Layered Double Hydroxides for Efficient and Stable Nitrate Reduction

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ternary CuZnFe LDH enables efficient electrocatalytic nitrate‐to‐ammonia conversion via controlled in situ reconstruction: zinc leaching creates porous active sites, copper reduced to metallic copper, while iron oxide keeps stable. Synergistic Cu‐Fe redox coupling drives tandem catalysis (nitrate→nitrite→NH3), achieving 95% Faraday efficiency and ...

Cloud Inspired White and Grey Plasmonic Metasurfaces for Camouflaged Thermal Management

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by clouds' role in Earth's thermal management, this work presents disordered plasmonic metasurfaces that mimic their radiative effects. The white metasurface enhances backscattering, acting as a cooling layer with camouflage properties.
