ABSTRACT Background Adaptive learning systems infer mastery from observed correctness, but this approach may fall short when learners exhibit ‘deceptive overgeneralization’—performing correct actions based on incomplete understanding. This phenomenon can mislead systems into prematurely stopping practice, leaving knowledge gaps unaddressed.
