Evaluating Erosional Stability of Reconstructed Mine Landscapes Using Landform Evolution Models: Parameterisation and Decadal‐Scale Erosion Assessment

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Ensuring the long‐term erosional stability of post‐mining landforms remains a major challenge in open‐pit mining. Reconstructed landscapes must support the agreed post‐mining land use, such as cattle grazing in the Hunter region of southeastern Australia, requiring stable pasture and minimal soil loss.

Single-spin qubits in isotopically enriched silicon at low magnetic field

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
One of the main sources of decoherence in silicon electron spin qubits is their interaction with nearby fluctuating nuclear spins. Zhao et al. present a device made from enriched silicon to reduce the nuclear spin density and find its performance is ...

Swimming Upriver? Exploring the Sources of Freshwater and Marine Fish in Military Diet in Sixteenth‐ to Nineteenth‐Century Northeastern North America

open access: yesInternational Journal of Osteoarchaeology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Atlantic cod were caught in large numbers and shipped from fishing stations in North America to Europe and the Caribbean, and this has been frequently studied zooarchaeologically; however, the exchange of cod and other fish into interior North America has received less study.

Continental accumulation of fads2 copy numbers allows sticklebacks to thrive across a diversity of nutritional landscapes

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Nutrients, including vital organic compounds, vary in availability across ecosystems, with the potential to act as a source of selection for traits that increase nutrient acquisition and biosynthesis. Compared to freshwaters, marine ecosystems are richer in the omega‐3 long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (n‐3 LC‐PUFA) docosahexaenoic acid (DHA ...

Photoinduced quenching of the ^{229}Th isomer in a solid-state host

open access: yesPhysical Review Research
The population dynamics of the ^{229}Th isomeric state is studied in a solid-state host under laser illumination. A photoquenching process is observed, where off-resonant vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) radiation leads to relaxation of the isomeric state.
