Lottery or waiting-line auction?
Journal of Public Economics, 2003Abstract This paper studies the efficiencies of the two most widely used non-price allocation mechanisms: lotteries and waiting-line auctions. As our analysis suggests, in addition to the fairness of the mechanism, the use of lotteries in lieu of waiting-line auctions can be also justified from an efficiency point of view. In particular, we show that

Reducing the “wait” in waiting-line systems: Waiting line segmentation
Business Horizons, 1997The problem of long wait in queue in apparent wherever there is a waiting-line system, but the cost of waiting is not the same for all customers. The authors propose a new model of waiting, called Waiting Line Segmentation. Waiting lines are segmented into customers who are willing to pay a premium for faster service and those who are not.

If prizes are to be awarded simultaneously at a specified time on a first-come- first-served basis, then individuals who queue for them will choose different waiting times through their arrivals at the queue. This choice of arrival time at a queue is similar to the choice of a sealed tender in an auction.

Analysis on Waiting Lines in the Context of Service Encounter: Waiting Lines
Asian Journal of Managerial Science, 2023It is quite often that a customer comes in contact with a service provider. Often we call each this contact as moments of truth. It is quite true that each of these moments of truth need the qualification as a satisfying one for enhancing the customer prospects.

Waiting Lines and Times in a System with Polling
Journal of the ACM, 1974A communication system consisting of a number of buffered input terminals connected to a computer by a single channel is analyzed. The terminals are polled in sequence and the data is removed from the terminal's buffer. When the buffer has been emptied, the channel, for an interval of randomly determined length, is used for system overhead and/or to ...

Stochastic Properties of Waiting Lines
Journal of the Operations Research Society of America, 1955The stochastic properties of waiting lines may be analyzed by a two-stage process: first solving the time-dependent equations for the state probabilities and then utilising these transient solutions to obtain the auto-correlation function for queue length and the root-mean-square frequency spectrum of its fluctuations from mean length.

Waiting lines in the endoscopy unit
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, 2000The efficient management of the endoscopy unit involves issues of scheduling. The aim of this study was to assess efficient use of an endoscopy unit and its relationship to patient waiting.Formulas of queueing theory are applied to patient scheduling in endoscopy.
