Mechanisms of wake deflection angle change behind a heaving airfoil
Journal of Fluids and Structures, 2014Abstract An immersed-boundary numerical method is applied to simulate the wake downstream of a two-dimensional heaving airfoil. A switch of vortex pattern is found to be the major reason that a deflected asymmetric wake reverses its deflection angle.

Observations of Acoustic Ray Deflection by Aircraft Wake Vortices
Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1972Acoustic ray deflection by aircraft wake vortex flows has been observed during landing operations of large aircraft. The phenomenon has been used to detect and locate vortex traces in a plane perpendicular to the runway centerline. The maximum deflection angles observed for a variety of aircraft show qualitative agreement with values predicted for a ...

Numerical study of the wake induced by a porous disk under deflected inflow
Heat Transfer, 2022AbstractThis study examines the wake of a porous disk that generates a velocity deficit equivalent to that of a wind turbine. Three‐dimensional unsteady numerical simulations based on the finite volume method are performed. The URANS‐SST (k–ω) model is applied for the turbulence closure.

Three-dimensional transition after wake deflection behind a flapping foil
Physical Review E, 2015We report the inherently three-dimensional linear instabilities of a propulsive wake, produced by a flapping foil, mimicking the caudal fin of a fish or the wing of a flying animal. For the base flow, three sequential wake patterns appear as we increase the flapping amplitude: Bénard-von Kármán (BvK) vortex streets; reverse BvK vortex streets; and ...

Study of Deflected Wake Phenomena by 2D Unsteady Vortex Lattice
50th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference, 2009Point vortex calculations are compared to experimental results for a 2D pitching and plunging airfoil. The point vortex method is then used to simulate a flat plate in high frequency pitch, plunge, and combined motions. Low frequency motion causes the wake to convect away from the trailing edge parallel to the freestream.

Wake Deflection in Long Distance From a Yawed Wind Turbine
Journal of Energy Resources Technology, 2017Since it is important to prevent the wake produced by upstream wind turbines from interfering with downstream wind turbines, a method of deflecting such wakes is desired. In this paper, we present the coupled analysis results of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation involving a three-bladed rigid wind turbine with a yaw control system that ...

Experimental and Computational Analysis of an Expansion Deflection Nozzle in Open-Wake Mode
26th AIAA Applied Aerodynamics Conference, 2008This paper presents a rapid solution method for flows within an Expansion Deflection nozzle operating within the atmosphere. The technique is based primarily on the Method of Characteristics, with integrated solution of the Rankine Hugoniot shock equations.

Deflected oscillatory wake pattern behind two side-by-side circular cylinders
Ocean Engineering, 2020Abstract Wake flow behind structures is of fundamental significance and practical interest in ocean engineering. Several asymmetric flow patterns, such as the deflected stationary, flip-flop and deflected oscillatory wakes, behind two cylinders in a side-by-side arrangement have been reported most recently.
