Design, commissioning and performance of a device to vary the turbulence in a recirculating flume
Ambient turbulent flow structures are one of the key drivers that will determine the rate of wake recovery downstream of tidal turbines. For second and third generation arrays or farms such a parameter is critical for the determination of inter-device ...

Abstract Power losses at waked turbines due to the energy extraction of upstream turbines from the flow pose a major risk to the economic feasibility of wind farms. Helix active wake control has proven its potential to mitigate these wake-induced power losses by accelerating the recovery of the individual turbine wakes.

Midbrain PAG Astrocytes Modulate Mouse Defensive and Panic‐Like Behaviors
Astrocytes in the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) dynamically encode threat intensity and shape defensive action selection in mice. Real‐time Ca2+ imaging reveals robust astrocytic activation during predator odor and CO2 exposure. Aberrant astrocytic Ca2+ overactivation disrupts goal‐directed escape, biases behavior toward freezing, and induces ...

Ultra-fast escape maneuver of an octopus-inspired robot [PDF]
We design and test an octopus-inspired flexible hull robot that demonstrates outstanding fast-starting performance. The robot is hyper-inflated with water, and then rapidly deflates to expel the fluid so as to power the escape maneuver.

Atmospheric Turbulence Effects on Wind Turbine Wakes over Two-Dimensional Hill: A Wind Tunnel Study
The wake behavior of wind turbines in complex terrain is influenced by the combined effects of atmospheric turbulence and terrain features, which brings challenges to wind farm power production and safety.

Wind-farm wake recovery mechanisms in conventionally neutral boundary layers
Synthetic-aperture radar images and mesoscale models show that wind-farm wakes differ from single-turbine wakes. For instance, wind-farm wakes often narrow and do not disperse over long distances, contrasting the broader and more dissipating wakes of individual turbines.
