Record of parasitoidism in nests of the primitively social wasp Zethus miniatus Saussure, 1858 (Hymenoptera, Vespidae)

open access: yesEntomological Communications
This note presents two new records of parasitoidism in the nest of the subsocial wasp’ species Zethus (Zethoides) miniatus Saussure, 1858. The nests were collected in two different localities in the Neotropical Savanna - “cerrado” (Minas Gerais State ...

Pain and Lethality Induced by Insect Stings: An Exploratory and Correlational Study

open access: yesToxins, 2019
Pain is a natural bioassay for detecting and quantifying biological activities of venoms. The painfulness of stings delivered by ants, wasps, and bees can be easily measured in the field or lab using the stinging insect pain scale that rates the pain ...

Laterally Transferred Gene Recruited as a Venom in Parasitoid Wasps.

open access: yesMolecular biology and evolution, 2016
Parasitoid wasps use venom to manipulate the immunity and metabolism of their host insects in a variety of ways to provide resources for their offspring. Yet, how genes are recruited and evolve to perform venom functions remain open questions. A recently

Starspots on WASP-107 and pulsations of WASP-118 [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2017
By analysing the K2 short-cadence photometry we detect starspot occultation events in the lightcurve of WASP-107, the host star of a warm-Saturn exoplanet. WASP-107 also shows a rotational modulation with a period of 17.5 +/- 1.4 d. Given that the rotational period is nearly three times the planet's orbital period, one would expect in an aligned system

Evidence for Widespread Associations between Neotropical Hymenopteran Insects and Actinobacteria

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2017
The evolutionary success of hymenopteran insects has been associated with complex physiological and behavioral defense mechanisms against pathogens and parasites.

Stellar Obliquities & Planetary Alignments (SOPA) I. Spin-Orbit measurements of Three Transiting Hot Jupiters: WASP-72b, WASP-100b, & WASP-109b [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
We report measurements of the sky-projected spin--orbit angles for three transiting hot Jupiters: two of which are in nearly polar orbits, WASP-100b and WASP-109b, and a third in a low obliquity orbit, WASP-72b. We obtained these measurements by observing the Rossiter--McLaughlin effect over the course of the transits from high resolution spectroscopic

Development, Survival and Phenology of the Sweetclover Weevil Parasitoid, \u3ci\u3ePygostolus Falcatus\u3c/i\u3e (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Biennial sweetclovers were widely used for soil improvement and as for- ages in the first half of the 1900s. The introduction of the sweetclover weevil, Sitona cylindricollis, caused a drastic decline in sweetclover acreage.

WASP-52b, WASP-58b, WASP-59b, and WASP-60b: Four new transiting close-in giant planets [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2013
We present the discovery of four new transiting hot jupiters, detected mainly from SuperWASP-North and SOPHIE observations. These new planets, WASP-52b, WASP-58b, WASP-59b, and WASP-60b, have orbital periods ranging from 1.7 to 7.9 days, masses between 0.46 and 0.94 M_Jup, and radii between 0.73 and 1.49 R_Jup.

Diversity and pollination value of insects visiting the flowers of a rare buckwheat (Eriogonum pelinophilum: Polygonaceae) in disturbed and "natural" areas

open access: yesJournal of Pollination Ecology, 2011
We compared flower-visitors of the endangered plant Eriogonum pelinophilum, at relatively undisturbed and highly disturbed sites. We found no difference between sites in flower visitation rate or species richness of flower-visitors; species diversity of ...

Discovery of WASP-113b and WASP-114b, two inflated hot-Jupiters with contrasting densities [PDF]

open access: yesA&A 593, A113 (2016), 2016
We present the discovery and characterisation of the exoplanets WASP-113b and WASP-114b by the WASP survey, {\it SOPHIE} and {\it CORALIE}. The planetary nature of the systems was established by performing follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations.
