Microfluidic Modeling of Macrophage‐Induced Cardiac Inflammation Using NF‐κB Reporter Cardiomyocytes

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A cardiac inflammation model was developed to enable real‐time analysis of macrophage‐cardiomyocyte interactions using NF‐κB‐reporter cardiomyocytes and a microfluidic co‐culture system. A MATLAB‐based model was implemented to optimize cell density and medium resupply based on TNFα diffusion kinetics. Activation thresholds and stress responses in NF‐κB‐

Waste management and household effort: toward an enhanced ADF policy [PDF]

open access: yes
Advanced Disposal Fees (ADF) are rather popular in waste management policies, but they cease any waste reduction effort at the household level. We propose a waved ADF policy which enhances this system by giving to the households the possibility to sign a

Solid Wastes Generation in Covenant University, Ota, Nigeria: Characterisation and Implication for Sustainable Waste Management [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Adequate waste characterisation is a requirement for effective waste management and environmental benign waste disposal system. The objectives of this paper were to estimate the percentage of various components in characterised solid waste materials ...

Aqueous Two‐Phase Bioinks for Discrete Packing and Compartmentalization of 3D Bioprinted Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Aqueous two‐phase systems (ATPS) enable the formation of biomimetic interfaces crucial for tissue engineering. However, clinical translation remains limited by the challenge of precisely controlling cellular compartmentalization. Here, we developed ATPS biomaterial inks for 3D bioprinting allowing tuneable droplet formation via NaCl modulation.

The Cost of Reducing Municipal Solid Waste [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper explores public policies for reduction of municipal solid waste. We parameterize a simple model of waste disposal using supply and demand elasticities from the economics literature and 1990 prices and quantities of recyclable and recycled ...

An Edible H2O2 Biosensor for Gastrointestinal Metabolites and Peroxidase Enzyme Quantification

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We present an edible biosensor for gastric fluid analysis that integrates a caffeic acid–horseradish peroxidase redox system into an edible electrolyte‐gated transistor. The device enables rapid, low‐volume detection of H2O2 and, with minimal modification, metabolites and enzyme activity in simulated gastrointestinal conditions.

Legal Review Concerning the Use of Health Impact Assessments in Non-Health Sectors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Examines laws supporting the use of health impact assessments in the areas of environment and energy, transportation, agriculture, and waste disposal and recycling, and issues regarding authority to conduct HIAs in these sectors.

Advanced 3D Platforms for Modeling CNS Neuroinflammation: Cell Integration, Techniques, and Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the roles of key central nervous system cell types, the extracellular matrix, and the blood‐brain barrier in neuroinflammation, and their integration into diverse 3D culture systems. It examines major incorporation strategies, including direct co‐culture, hydrogel encapsulation, transwell migration assays, and bioprinting ...

Long-term creep of Beishan granite under uniaxial compression

open access: yesInternational Journal of Mining Science and Technology
Investigations into the long-term creep behavior of Beishan granite in uniaxial compression were conducted. Four levels of axial stress (60, 70, 87, and 95 MPa) were applied to rock specimens.

COST COMPARISONS OF ALTERNATIVE METHODS FOR PROCESSING RECYCLED WASTE NEWSPAPERS INTO FARM-ANIMAL BEDDING [PDF]

open access: yes
The United States is facing a seemingly overwhelming problem of how to dispose of its solid waste. For disposal solutions to be viable, they must be environmentally sound and economically viable. Processing waste newspapers for farm-animal bedding offers
