Stratification in Waste Stabilization Ponds I: Effects on Pond Parameters

open access: yesNigerian Journal of Technology, 2012
Stratification studies were carried out on the waste stabilization pond system at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria. Analysis of the samples collected with a water column sampler at 5cm and 0.1m apart showed some stratification of temperature, algae, pH, dissolved oxygen, coliform bacteria, chemical oxygen demand and nutrients.

The effect of aerated rock filter geometry on the rate of nitrogen removal from facultative pond effluents

open access: yes
Rock Filters are an established technology for polishing waste stabilization pond effluents. However, they rapidly become anoxic and consequently do not remove ammonium-nitrogen.Horizontal-flow aerated rock filters (HFARF), developed to permit ...

Licensed Commoning and the Authoritarian Commons: Governing Participation in China's Community Gardens

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT China's environmental governance transition combines intensified vertical accountability and performance‐based management with expanding calls for public participation. However, despite growing demand for civic engagement, there remains limited understanding of how participatory environmental initiatives are structured and governed in practice.

Governing Positive Energy Districts: The Role of Legitimation and Identity Across Residential and Industrial Contexts

open access: yesEnvironmental Policy and Governance, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Increasing electricity demand from data centres, industrial applications, electric vehicles and domestic heating is creating pressure to develop electricity systems in many parts of the world, but especially in Western countries. In response to challenges such as grid congestion, interconnection queues and climate‐related hazards, network ...

Spatiotemporal dynamics and potential pathogen fate of microeukaryotic communities in a full-scale waste stabilization pond system

open access: yesEnvironmental Sciences Europe
Waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) represent a sustainable, low-cost wastewater treatment option, yet the ecological dynamics of microeukaryotic communities and their pathogenic potential remain underexplored.

Design and Synthesis of Lactose‐Derived Ligands and Their Application in Asymmetric Friedel–Crafts Alkylation

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Organic Chemistry, EarlyView.
This work describes the synthesis of lactose‐ and glucose‐derived chiral ligands and their application in the catalytic enantioselective Friedel–Crafts alkylation of indole with a series of trans‐β‐nitrostyrenes. The optimal ligand was an acetate protected, lactose‐derived pyridyl imine and its zinc complex afforded ees up to 93% and yields up to 93 ...

Functional Bread From Bambara Groundnut and Orange Peel Attenuates Hyperglycemia and Oxidative Stress in a High‐Fat Diet/Streptozotocin‐Induced Type 2 Diabetes Rat Model

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
This study evaluated Bambara groundnut–wheat composite bread fortified with orange peel in diabetic rats. Diets significantly lowered blood glucose, inhibited α‐glucosidase and α‐amylase, and boosted antioxidant enzymes compared to controls. Results emphasize BG‐based functional foods' potential to help manage type 2 diabetes through regulation of ...
